Zohran Mamdani

I'm not denying this but I would like to see your sources, because you admit to ignoring many news sources.
You misunderstand. I'm unimpressed by the claim that Mamdani makes the DSA look good in general. I'm not asking you to dismiss that claim.

I'm also not trying to convince you that even progressives in my city are getting tired of DSA antics.

If you think I should be glazing Mamdani and the DSA as much as some others do, make your case.

No.

You made a claim, but you have elsewhere said that you avoid mainstream news, so I want to evaluate your claim that even lefties are tired of the antics of the DSA fraction.

Has he, though?

Even the lefties in my city are sick and tired of the antics of the DSA faction on our city council. Mamdani isn't rehabilitating their image; they're tarnishing his.

I don't think subsidizing maintenance would really be a solution, for a number of reasons.

First of all, I think it would be politically unpopular. The question "Why are you giving money to these greedy landlords" would invariably be raised.

Secondly, lack of maintenance is not the only problem rent controls cause. A reduction in supply and an increase in demand also results (even if the units are maintained adequately.)
◊◊◊◊ them. As Adam Smith himself said rentiers are the lowest of the low. The create nothing but parasite off everybody else.

No.

One, the claim you want to evaluate is not the claim I actually made.

Two, it wasn't so much a claim I aim to prove in support of an argument, as it is an evaluation of plague311's claim, based on my personal experience.

My evaluation is that plague311 has no idea whether Mamdani is actually having a favorable effect on voters who would not normally vote for DSA candidates and policies. Maybe he's basing this on mainstream media reports, what do you think?

Do they? It appears that the rent control board is to take costs/maintenance into consideration when setting rates, but there's no handouts for landlords.

Wow, your taxation system in America must be harsh.

Every other country I know of allows landlords to deduct expenses from the income received.

I'm surprised there are any landlords in USA.

The claim was that NYC subsidized maintenance for rent-controlled apartments. It doesn't.

The plan is for the city to obtain these unprofitable buildings, somehow, and somebody will renovate them then they'll be turned over to some sort of tenants co-op association, sometime. New Yorkers not wanting to pay a 9.5% property tax to help pay for these programs they voted for is kind of sus. Are New Yorkers really that cheap?

Private property is White supremacy, didn't you know?

And then there's this. Archive Link, ◊◊◊◊ paywalls.

Get out those wallets New Yorkers, don't be shy now.

Seems to work for us here in super socialist Canada. Here's my property tax increases and we have all these shiny new bike lanes...that pretty much nobody uses. And crosswalks every 50 feet, not the regular ones but the ones that allow you to hit the button, step out into the street in front of a moving car and force them to stomp on the brakes so you can give the operators of those two ton metal death machines a good finger wagging. Ans new signs letting everybody know about the new, reduced speed limits. The ones that get ignored as much as the bike lanes do. But at least, on paper, "we're" trying.

  • 2026: 5.4% increase
  • 2025: 8.00%
  • 2024: 8.00%
  • 2023: 7.3%

Rentiers everywhere love to moan that they're being overtaxed. For example, over here they'll say that they're paying 60% of their income in taxes neatly ignoring that the figure is a combination of two different categories of tax that are levied on different types of income; and also as business owners they're allowed to write off expenses* and avail of tax breaks that aren't available to the ordinary worker. The reality is that roughly two thirds of the Irish tax take is PAYE (income tax on wages and salaries) and VAT (a sales tax), both of which fall on the ordinay employee and which the business owner or "entrepreneur" gets to largely ignore.

*With massive scope for padding out with non-business expenses if you've a half way competent accountant.

You're free to move. No one is forcing you to stay in this hellhole. The utopian low-tax USA is looking for more immigrants like you.

But instead you'll just sit back and enjoy the benefits of the society that imposes these taxes while whining that you personally have to share in the costs.

I just moved out of a high-tax, low-benefit, liberal-run jurisdiction. Specifically because the taxes kept going up while the benefits kept deteriorating.

Incidentally, have you tried selling a home in a high-tax, low-benefit market? It's brutal. We bought at what turned out to be pretty much the peak of a popularity wave. Now we're in the long trough, trying to sell for less than we paid, but more than we still owe on the mortgage. The fact is that people with money are fleeing this jurisdiction, or just not buying into it in the first place.

Then there's you, pissing in my pocket and telling me it's a fair exchange for the money that used to be there before the tax man took it.

I don't need to move to the U.S. There's plenty of places in Canada that don't collect property taxes to pay for things that pretty much nobody uses. But, hey they look good, right?

I actually like the bike lanes, especially the bit about usually having them to myself however got around just fine on a bicycle before the city spent +$60M (and climbing) on them.

A 9.5% increase to pay for Mamdani's promised utopia with free transit and government owned grocery stores delivering cut rate fresh fruit and veggies to the masses appears to be to high a price to pay.

Looked up Weaver and she fits the profile of a typical DSA member--white, Bryn Mawr undergrad, NYU MA. Nate Silver had an interesting observation about the DSA the other day; they tend to be what he calls "downwardly mobile." In essence, the DSA tends to be made up of highly-educated but lower paid individuals.

Based on this grid, what is the most Democratic voting group in America? It’s voters with postgraduate degrees but lower-to-middle household incomes of $30K to $60K per year.

This is very much also the sweet spot for the DSA. In the group’s most recent member survey in 2021, 80 percent of members aged 25 or older had bachelor’s degrees, but 45 percent had household incomes below $60,000 per year.
According to some sources Weaver will be making about $120,000. Not bad but probably below average for a Bryn Mawr graduate.

Sounds like you paid the same amount, just a different type, of tax

If you want to think of falling property values as a kind of "tax", sure.

ETA: I should say, falling property values due to gross mismanagement of city government, by a proudly progressive city council, dominated by DSA councilors.

A retarded "tax", that doesn't even pretend to offer anything of value in exchange.

It's not like I object to paying taxes in exchange for government services. You're ignoring the most important part of my story. Probably because it doesn't fit your narrative of noble socialists redistributing wealth for the betterment of the community as a whole. Turns out my local socialists are retarded scumbags who are as corrupt as they are incompetent.

Pretty sure I said that

Yes, a great many things are factored. It doesn't mean the relevant governments don't provide assistance to make sure the homes are maintained.
but there's no handouts for landlords.
I know people, mainly my own family, who would take offense to the word "handout", but there are programs for asssiting with maintenance and upgrades.
