Okay, Obama has appointed YOU to the White House Cabinet to deal with the drugs crisis in mexico. How would you deal with it?

Me, The Gloves come off and the sword will leave its scabbard. For the US, the situation in Mexico is as serious as the War on Terror:

1). Send an expeditionary force to assist the Mexican government in taking out the Cartels in the Border Regions. This Expeditionary force should be able to crush any Cartel forces that will be mustered due to lessons learned from Iraq and Afghanistan.

2) Deploy B-2 Spirits or B-1 lancers to strike Drug lords that are entrenched. If the DLs are out in Sea, then Navy SEALS will pay them a "visit"

3) Legalise, but STRICTLY regulate some drugs with severe penalties for any other drugs being sold. Any US Citizen caught aiding the Cartels (by selling on weapons for example) will be severely Punished.

As a resident of AZ and a cop I say first and foremost have Law enforcement and the military work hand in hand to to help plug the border. I realize it cannot be completely sealed, but for the cartels that come across armed, treat them as foreign invaders and neutralize them. The unarmed illeagals arrest them and send them back. The coyotes that smuggle the illegals, toss there asses in jail or if they are armed which most of them are, then once again treat them as foreign invaders.

It is very frustrating to have a large area of the state that is too dangerous for US citizens to travel into or through due to the amount of drug cartels smuggling their drugs.

For those who stated legalize drugs, HELL NO!!!! I deal with drug addicts on a daily basis and that would only worsen more problems than I can name in this post. Legalizing drugs would not solve the problem.

Rollo9: I am not in law enforcement and never have been. However, I've been fiends with some folks who *may have* smoked marijuana. ... They were pretty much "low ambition" folks. However, none of them victimized anyone else. They were nice guys.

If the legal stigma against marijuana is removed, what is the negative consequence? We already have plenty of folks dying as a result of alcohol consumption, but that is fine.

If I condense my experience from evidence to anecdote (not having done a thorough experiment) I'd rather be with someone high than someone drunk.

And let's not forget that prohibition makes an otherwise normal business into a criminal enterprise... I appreciate that, with marijuana classified as an illegal substance in the USA and, therefore, a contraband substance, there are A) economic incentives for those willing to engage in traffic of marijuana and B) a relationship between marijuana trafficing and loss-of-respect for the law.

However, if marijuana were treated more like alcohol, wouldn't that echo the end of prohibition? This is an old argument, I know, but what is your answer?

So you would rather deal with violent criminals who make billions of dollars off of the drug trade and are willing to do literally anything to protect their profits?

ETA: Also, do you think it would be better to deal with addicts who receive their stuff from drug companies who can guarantee the quality of the product at a low price or drug cartels whose product could contain anything at an extremely inflated price? Which are they more likely to be harmed by? Which are they more likely to hurt other people to get (money to buy the drugs)?

It's a pity that there are real world examples that contradict your feelings.

If you look at Portugal, when personal use and possession was decriminalized, drug use and crime went down.

When alcohol was made illegal in the states, crime went up and the mob became much more powerful.
