Incredible the sorts of messes ham-fisted bureaucrats get themselves into, isn't it? As I'm writing this - at 13 minutes past the hour - the counter turned over at 3,000,000 hits. Since apparently this is on all the news stations in the UK, I'm betting it hits 4,000,000 by tomorrow.*
The name of the blog was her only real complaint, IIRC. "Never seconds" refers to the fact that she alludes to in one blog post - that she leaves the lunch room hungry. She actually liked quite a lot of the food, but she would've liked to have had more. That's why she mentions in the most recent posts that they got chatted up by the hired help and were told "Well golly, kids. No one ever asked for seconds, so we didn't know you wanted any. Of course you can have seconds; that's always been the policy." (I paraphrase, of course.)
Can one of the Scots confirm/deny. Is Scotland like Canada, the USA and Thailand(**)? The government has various grants to agriculture and the dairy industry, and one of those on many state and provincial levels (in Thailand it's federal) is that the state buys copious quantities of milk, butter and bread and gives the schools as much of it as they want - for free (except that nothing's free, of course). So schools can give as many servings of dairy products and bread/rolls as the kids will eat. The school admins just have to offer it. When I was growing up in Louisiana, the state even made the same sweetheart deals available to private schools.
*Hell, they're now getting 190,000 hits an hour! In six minutes, they got 19,000 hits, so I averaged it out. She could break 6,000,000 by tomorrow if this goes any more viral!
(**) I just learned this today. Marcello got off the school bus and the teacher's assistant had me sign something (in Thai) as she said "Milk". She then said "Wait." And she came back from the bus with a case of 36 sippy sized cartons of UHT milk. They're just getting conscientious about calcium in diets in Asia over the past decade and having a very young but now fairly healthy dairy industry, the government buys large amounts of milk and mandates that the schools give it out and that they get signatures to prove they haven't turned it back into the gray market.
When Mart was pregnant all her Thai friends and Chinese friends were surprised that she wasn't on calcium supplements because they'd all been put on them when they were having babies (in HK or in Thailand). But Mart loved milk - in fact when she went in for her second trimester checkup the doc asked her if she was drinking milk and Mart answered "Two each day." The doctor told her she needed to have four cups a day. "Cups?? I drink two liters a day."
