Meh.
Someone in Spain did better- a calendar with Catholic saints as gays.

That's different, though, isn't it? These picture interpret something into the tradition that wasn't there originally. So - silly as it may be - someoine could be a bit upset about it. (And I'd consider that about as important as I would if anyone was upset about any other piece of satire or fanfic.)

These comics, however, don't actually interpret the text much, the sex isn't read into it or made up - it's there already and has always been there. If you get upset by the images you should already have been upset by the bible itself.

Spain is fantastic.
To be fair, the poses are done by transexuals.
I thought it was pretty well done, very much in the style of those amazing 3d postcards you can still buy around the Plaza Mayor.
You know, those postcards so designed that if you move it one way, the picture is of Jesus weeping, and then if you move it another way, he points to his heart.

You could take it as a tribute to a dying art form, since photoshop has changed all that.

Well, yeah, its a bit different... But I saw no point opening a thread just for it and its borderly on topic, I guess...

And yes, some people got upset by it. But hey, have you seen the Pope's clothes? Now, seriously, I think there's a lot of repressed sexual imagery (gay included) "hidden" within Christian imagery and myhts. Crumb's Bible just shows it, instead of keeping it veiled. The same with the gore and violence.

Yep. I agree. Saw some of those post cards back in my childhood times.

Oh, I wasn't disagreeing with your posting of the reference at all. and like I said: Getting upset over either of the two is a bit silly - I just think one is ever so slightly more silly than the other.

Oh, no problem.

Aniway, do they get mad when seeing images of a blond Jesus?
Or a blue- or geen-eyed Jesus?
Charlton Heston as Moses?

Now, show graphically what the Bible really is about and what you get is?

I mean, all those people killed because they worshipped Ba'al or a golden calf, those drowned in the flood, burnt by fire and brimstone... Not exactly gore-less beaty shots, I think.

Plus the incests, wife-stealing, etc...

I'd say those 6 pages are a good accurate portrayal of the bible.
What's the problem?

Not enough pictures.

I mean, Crumbs' works, I like them, but the Bible deserves a live-action treatment.
Something with lots of hot talented porn actress.

For what it's worth:

I've got a copy of Crumb's Genesis, and I've read it all the way through.

It's really excellent. I think it's the best work of his career. It's in no way meant as a satire. He does it completely straight, word-for-word. Even the "begats": He draws a tiny unique face for each "begat". As for the sex, he puts it in exactly as described in the text, no more no less. It's not particularly "hardcore".

Genesis illustrated by R. Crumb reminds me of a painting by Ivan Le Lorraine Albright titled "In His Image." Albright died in 1987. Does anyone remember his work or that painting?

Robert Crumb is a gifted artist, but anyone who has seen the documentary on him knows he , and his entire family, are messed right up. Severely screwed up, which might have something to do with his military upbringing, or maybe genetics on one side of the family. But all the kids were screwed. One killed himself, the other is living on skid row in the same apartment for the last 20+ years.

Robert is the only "normal" one of the three, and you can see by his headless women with large breasts and butts that he has issues with women. His ex wives will tell you as much.

He's also hung like a mule apparently. He could probably do a self-portrait for that part about those women wanting to be with men hung "like a mule and with issue as of horses'."

I'll take a "Jezebel," but not the part where the dogs ate all of her except the palms of her hands and the soles of her feet. :(

Clearly predicting the future science of fingerprint analysis! More proof of the Bible. It's true!

Awesome, it should bring the bible to a new host of readers,. . . :D
Hmm, you know, Church Boy, otherwise known as Ian Punnet, on Coast to Coast, did a little review on that the other day and said it was ok. He's a Episcopalian minister, so he is not about to endorse something racy. He does wonder about Crumb (the Keep on Truckin guy) , though and does not approve of his earlier work.

To be fair there is an awful lot of 'begatting' in the Bible and I'm sure it was no different then as it is now.

All Crumb needs to do is illustrate what is in there. He doesn't need to make it up.

I happened to catch an Illustrated Bible by Robert Crumb on an edition of the New Yorker. However, it wasn't the same. Apparently mr Crumb is having fun recreating the Bible several times from different points of view :)

:D
