Not really worried. I’m a state government employee with almost a decade under my belt, working in one of the few branches of our government with a positive cashflow. If I am getting bumped it means the world has pretty much collapsed into a Mad Max-style, post apocalyptic wasteland.

Self employed and business is probably going to be about the same. So I had to take the planet X option.

I said self employed but things are going to get tough.

I had a shock a few weeks back when I opened the paper to the business section and read that one of my projects was being put on hold. That project was 70% of my invoicable hours so things are already tough.

I'm getting really tired of the oil patch!

Its either feast or famine with not much in between.

My wife and I are contemplating selling our place in Alberta and moving to Texas to be closer to her family.

Pros:
1) If we can sell here we would be mortgage free down there.
2) Her dad and step mom are great people and I would love the chance to get closer to them.
3) I could throw away my snow shovel.

Cons:
1) I have no status in the US yet.
2) Her mother and step father are pure woo.
3) Its too damned hot down there!

Yeah, I'm just finishing grad school and am looking for a teaching job in the "disposable" subject of music. There aren't many jobs available here and we really can't afford to move right now. The legislature is hammering out the state budget but it's looking grim. The stimulus package might help but I'm not overly confident I'll find anything. It's a tough situation for everyone but if it hits home it'll seem that much worse.

One more "pro": You wouldn't have to change the location you have under your avatar.

Unlikely

I service home-equity accounts for people in bankruptcy, and work for a major bank that just bought another bank in a fire-sale.

Update: I just found out today that my company's looking to hire, mainly electronics technicians. Guess I might be safer than I thought.

Beanbag

The company where I work started going under in October. They've already cut our salaries by about 50%, fired all the overseas development teams, and about half the staff has left. We've been acquired by a new company in California but I'm expecting them to close us out in a month or two. Too much of a money pit I think. I'm in the process of looking for a new job. I'd like to leave with what's left of my dignity.

It seems like the big stimulus plan is going to make it through after all. Does it look as if this will help the prospects of anyone posting here? It's not relevant to me, personally, but I'd be interested in knowing if anyone here was hanging on this particular point.

I don't know what it's supposed to get me... if it's based on the money I made last year I'm screwed. If it's based on my 0 income so far this year, a few bucks isn't going to cut it either.

I put unlikely. My company is hitting hard times and cutting jobs, but my major function for them is to crunch the numbers and supply management reports on how the individuals in my center are performing.

Since nobody else is trained on how to run these reports and management is looking very closely at these reports due to the economic downturn, I feel and odd sense of job security. Also I work for a very large company so while times are hard and the company is trimming where it can, I don't see the company going out of business as very likely either.

That being said, in this economy, anything can happen and I may look like the eejit that The Drain has avoided.

ETA: oh yeah, the center that I work does internal collections for our company, so this is one of the sectors that actuallys is finding more work in this economy.

Well, I was right for the first round. Yesterday, my company announced 1000 layoffs nationwide, but as per my ETA above, the office I work in was spared due to it being a collections center.

Since I work for the Government they would find it very hard to sack me. However I do want to be made redundant. Mind you not much chance me getting one. Just waiting to see what happens.

I collect big time if I do get one.

For me unlikely.part time:IT manager/system admin/network admin/...,while studying applied informatics.(kicked from physics due to laziness)
