“Woke”

What is core to the category of 'woke'?

If the any of the following apply to you, the right will call you woke

- If you believe in and/or support LGBTQ+ rights.
- If you believe in and/or support racial equality in all things.
- If you think the true, warts and all history of your country should be taught at school.
- If you believe in and/or support voting rights, as in every person, regardless of race, creed or colour should have a right to vote.
- If you think that access initiatives such as ramps, wide-doors and reserved parking spots should be made for handicapped people.

These the categories of belief that will get you labelled 'woke'

What makes me think it's the intended effect and a power trip is exactly seeing you (and another fellow I won't name and shame) fantasize page after page, and in more than one thread, about how I feel threatened and whatnot. THAT is what marks it as an ego-wank. It's not just enough for some people to INVENT strawmen and whatnot so they can try to use "racism" and whatnot as a thought-terminating spell, half the time they also have to fantasize about what effect they had in their own delusional imagination. It's the same mechanism like when CT-ers imagine that the 'establishment' fears them enough to try to silence them or whatnot. It's a way for petty and otherwise useless people to imagine they're some kind of Gandalf.

In effect this is the impression some people give: Chūnibyō (中二病) is a Japanese colloquial term typically used to describe early teens who have grandiose delusions, who desperately want to stand out, and who have convinced themselves that they have hidden knowledge or secret powers. The difference is that in Japan you're kinda supposed to grow up and out of it by the time you're in high school. Yeah, in the West some people seem to never grow up and out of that. They just have to stay man-children who fantasize that they have some kind of Power Word: Fear that works every time.

At the risk of repeating myself, I don't need to feel personally threatened by anything to find it stupid and/or counter-productive. I don't need any extra reason than that, "fear" included, than when I find Pixie Of Key's posts about GR stupid.

In fact, you only need to look at the way the 'woke' side throws around their own words to see that most of them don't really need to feel personally threatened at all. I don't believe that the white male saviour types feel threatened when they throw around "racism", "sexism", "transphobe", etc, willy-nilly. There may be other psychological problems at work, which I should probably not annoy the mods by going into, but I don't think fear is one of them. I don't think any of them actually fear that they'll wake up next morning as a black woman so they'd actually be threatened by whatever they're protesting against.

Why then do you feel a need to believe that anyone else throwing, yes, an equally thought-terminating word is doing it out of fear? Why the double standard?

No seriously, make yourself comfortable on the sofa, relax and tell me why DO you need to fantasize about having a fear effect?

Not re-litigating everything every time is a good use for some categories. 'Racism' has been widely discredited as not just harmful but stupid and factually wrong. That doesn't need reestablished every time racism is accused and the conversation can move on to if or how something is related or caused by racism.

Yes but you do need to establish that it actually applies. Precisely because you're accusing someone of doing something wrong, it doesn't mean you get to use it willy-nilly each time you want to make someone shut up or just need something to complain about.

And yes, I really mean willy-nilly. Things that have been accused of being racist or sexist include stuff like MATHS. No, seriously, apparently even that is "rooted in white supremacist culture" and "used to oppress and marginalize people of colour." Apparently the very fact that it teaches people to think that there is only one right answer is somehow toxic and oppressive and whatnot. (And no, I'm not making it up: https://www.newsweek.com/math-racist-crowd-runs-rampant-seattle-portland-opinion-1701491 )

... and "sexist" too, because it demands the same high standards from girls: https://wbckfm.com/is-mathematics-sexist-now/ (Never mind that studies actually show that both are equally capable of functioning to the same standards: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41539-019-0057-x )

Cameras apparently "racist" too. Not just "you need better colour lookup tables", but the word used is flat out "racism." E.g., https://mashable.com/article/google-camera-image-equity

Or apparently physics textbooks are "sexist": https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020PhTea..58..625R/abstract

And chemistry textbooks too, because "The most common scientists featured in textbooks are white men." And generally, they don't have enough forced 'representation'. Yes, some actually think you should treat a college-level science manual like movies, when it comes to representation. See, only 3% of the scientists named in the text and index are female, so, you know, they don't give enough role models to girls and perpetuate gender bias and whatnot. E.g., https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jchemed.0c01037

.. and racist too, because even though more recent inventions are made by women, and thus result in gradually more women getting mentioned in those textbooks, "if you look at the intersection of race and gender, you really just see a large increase in [references to] White women over time." E.g., https://www.thecollegefix.com/chemi...-overrepresent-male-scientists-educators-say/

THAT is the problem. Yes, "racism" or "sexism" are bad. But so is attaching them nonsensically to anything and everything.

THAT is what gets people to complain about the whole race to the bottom to be the biggest whiner, and find some other imaginary injustice to whine about.

I mean, Jesus, look at some of the words the other side is using, if you can't otherwise see that you need a good reason and evidence before using such accusations. Like, just to pick something you touched on, take the accusations of "paedophilia" and "grooming children." We can probably agree that paedophilia and grooming are objectively wrong too. But that's why one shouldn't just use them willy-nilly whenever one doesn't have an actual argument.

Your observations are just faulty. They're also self-impeaching. Again, you're assuming the goal is to cause fear, and then using that assumption as justification for the argument that the goal is to cause fear.

The accusation of having 'grandiose delusions' comes right after you accuse me of having an ego trip spending time thinking about causing you fear with Gandalf like powers. Do you not see the conflict there? I've tried to be fairly gentle in my wording and you're imagining me sitting down getting a trill on the thought of causing you personally fear. That's delusional. It's also the exact kind of faulty reasoning I was talking about.

You're aggrandizing the concepts of 'threatened' and 'fear' as well, as if the very concept of those being human motivations is a personal attack. One can feel 'threatened' or 'fear' without feeling like they're going to be physically or mentally scarred, without them being major things. Admitting to the possibility that they can impact one's, or yours specifically, reactions is not some weakness or major flaw that's going to impact your position. Not in society, not physically, not mentally, not in interpersonal conflict, not in the argument.

I don't think any of them actually fear that they'll wake up next morning as a black woman so they'd actually be threatened by whatever they're protesting against.

Is this really your limited understanding of feeling fear or feeling threatened? Direct personal, physical, threats are not the only stakes that could make one feel those things. Is there truly nothing you feel threatened of losing that doesn't inhabit you personally? I don't have to fear waking up as a black woman to feel threatened by the problems of racism. Even if one leaves aside that people like me are 'race traitors' and the like who are indeed individually threatened (literally in my case) for supporting marginalized friends and family, even if one leaves aside that those friends and family suffering harms (including not physical!) is something one can and should feel threatened over, those problems drag down social, legal, cultural, and even technological progress in general which impacts everyone. 'You can't honestly be that worried because you're not X (black, gay, etc)' is not just an invalid ad hom, it's factually wrong.

You even lay out valid reasons to be threatened by these things later. You understand the concept but then forget it when you want to impeach the motives of the 'woke'. It isn't rational to claim that you personally and the 'woke white saviors' you decry in general shouldn't feel threatened or have fears when you then lay out rational reasons for exactly that to happen.

And to be clear, I have not once argued that fear was the only possible motivator.

Why then do you feel a need to believe that anyone else throwing, yes, an equally thought-terminating word is doing it out of fear? Why the double standard?

You're imagining a double standard that doesn't exist. I have not argued that it isn't possible. I specifically said for one of your examples that people do.

No seriously, make yourself comfortable on the sofa, relax and tell me why DO you need to fantasize about having a fear effect?

Yes but you do need to establish that it actually applies. Precisely because you're accusing someone of doing something wrong, it doesn't mean you get to use it willy-nilly each time you want to make someone shut up or just need something to complain about.

This again assumes the motivation is to control you, to cause fear, or something like it. You argue as if the people can't just be correct or wrong, but only attacking someone.

And yes, I really mean willy-nilly. Things that have been accused of being racist or sexist include stuff like MATHS. THAT is what gets people to complain about the whole race to the bottom to be the biggest whiner, and find some other imaginary injustice to whine about.

The injustices you cite are people being wrong and saying some mean things. More on that below.

The same people accusing people of being pedos and groomers use 'woke' in the way you claim you object to for other terms like 'racism' and 'sexism'. The double standard is yours. Why is it acceptable to use 'woke' that way? And as I already challenged you to think about and you declined to show any thought of, those other terms have major aspects litigated to show the problems they describe. The 'problem' described by 'woke' is being aware of various forms of oppression. You might be trying to argue that 'woke' actually describes the over extension of forms of oppression to cover things they don't apply to, but that's already a problem for using 'woke' as a pejorative itself.

At no point did I say that accusations of racism and sexism and the like don't need to have good evidence and reason, and specifically said the utility of not relitigating if the base concept is wrong or not can allow for the conversation to move on to if it applies or not.

The injustices you cite are people being wrong and saying some mean things. More on that below.

You'll have to elaborate on that, I think. Are you saying that it's those who wrote that maths is racist and toxic because it teaches people that there's only one answer, that are wrong and saying mean things? Or that they actually describe an injustice? It's a bit hard to be 100% sure of how to parse that.

The 'problem' described by 'woke' is being aware of various forms of oppression. You might be trying to argue that 'woke' actually describes the over extension of forms of oppression to cover things they don't apply to, but that's already a problem for using 'woke' as a pejorative itself.

Well, the problem there is that you seem to assume that when two people talk about oppression, they both have the same idea, and both know that person X is right and person Y is in the wrong. That's not the case even when Y is actually being a racist or sexist. And even less so when X could be seeing it as misogyny to hold girls to the same standards as the boys in maths (I just gave you a link as an example), while Y could be thinking that X is actually the one showing his own mysogyny. You know, because X is the one making the underlying assumption that girls are inherently less capable in maths. And incidentally there Y would be the one in the right, and having the studies to prove it on his side.

Anyway, of course Y will think X is wrong, either way. Thinking that Y actually thinks of X as "being aware of various forms of oppression" when calling X "woke" is bizarre and bordering on delusional.

No, let me reassure you that whenever "woke" is being thrown around, regardless of whether it's for good or bad reason, what is actually meant is an ass-clown who's just looking hard for a reason to get offended. Which may be correct or not, but it's kinda the opposite of thinking of you as "aware of oppression" :p

And that's pretty much a dead end for all those fantasies that start from that premise.

This all part of the same core mythology, this idea that there's some core group of people out there who are making "Being a basically decent human being" so difficult that you'll never do it, ergo might as well be horrible.

I've described the current state of the Republican Party as a big performance art act of going "Well I was going to be a decent human being, no totally for realizes I was you simply must believe me... but then I saw a liberal college thinkpiece that says we need a gender neutral Mr. Potato Head so now they have left me literally no choice but to be a Nazi."

Same thing here. If you're only a good person until you have the first excuse not to be, if you're on constant hyper alert for any good person showing any flaw so you can dismiss them AND THE CONCEPT OF BEING GOOD ALONG WITH THEM, if nobody can ever be so perfect and pure to get over your "Well just whole the hell are you to tell me what to do, you aren't perfect either" defense, you're just a horrible person, not a good one waiting on conditions to improve.

I've said it before, I've said it again, and I'm saying it now. Good people being slightly annoying does not give you the right to be just outright horrible anywhere near as much as people are pretending it does.

And the "sins" of the good people we're supposed to even notice, much less care about, much, much less decided to be horrible over are just so goddamn laughable. Virtue signaling. Being dramatic. Being the internet's version of a hypocrite which is nothing more than "You dared to hold two different opinions about anything ever." None of those are even a thing, much less a problem to be solved, much much less things to look at and go "Well that's it. Now that I've seen that I'm going to be a psychopath."

Mate, let me tell you just: everyone thinks they're the hero in their own story. Especially the villains.

The notion that anyone would actually think of themselves as "yeah, I'm a bad person because <insert excuse> made me one", that's so far off the mark, it's not even funny. NOBODY thinks of themselves that way. Even the actual Nazis, as in actual card-carrying National-Socialist Party members, would not actually describe themselves as "those other guys are the good guys, personally I'm a horrible human being, but that's what made me one." And everyone else would not think "and here's why I'm a Nazi..."

Absolutely. There is a continuing delusion, by no means just from Joe, that everyone actually agrees on the facts, agrees on what is good and bad, and it's just that some people decide to be bad and that is what politics is about.

Dude there's people here on this board and in this thread who scream that out loud during orgasm and have it knitted on the throw pillows in their parlor they make it so obvious. We have people who don't just think that but that's their entire personality.

Explain to me what "Virtue Signaling" means outside of that context.

Don't judge me.

But... but I was just informed that nevers happens and I was totally making it up and stuffs.
They were lying to you, just like they lie when they say you shouldn't send me all your money. You know what you need to do.

Any particular examples? As in, where they actually say that?

Explain to me what "Virtue Signaling" means outside of that context.

It means you're signalling to whatever group you wish to make yourself more popular with, something that hopefully that group would praise as a virtue, nothing more.

Which group too may not necessarily act according to those values. In fact we even have the word "groupthink" for when members of a group support a decision or course of action or such, let's call it X, and possibly even visibly or loudly signal their support, just because they THINK that that's what the rest of the members want. In fact, it may not actually be the case. It's even possible that most of the members of the group are NOT for X. Sometimes none of the members may actually be for X.

What you're in fact proposing is that not only every member of the group, but even their opponents actually agree that X is the best and most morally correct choice. Elementary psychology would tell you that's not the case. BY FAR.

Essentially think of a mob screaming "burn the witch!" in the 1500's. Not all of them may actually believe that the poor woman deserves to die, or even that witchcraft actually exists. Possibly even none other than the witch hunter and the bellend who denounced her. But once you live in an environment where it's dangerous to say otherwise because (as in most of continental Europe) "only another witch would defend a witch", it may be safer to just signal to the group the "virtue" of being a good Christian who takes "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" to heart, than not to. The whole group may be busy signalling it to each other, even though essentially none of the members have that "virtue".

At any rate, it doesn't mean even they actually have that "virtue", much less that it's a good one, much less that even their opponents would agree that it's a good one.

But seriously, I don't see what in Lucifer Morningstar's good name would make you believe it means they think you're right, or anything of the kind.

Nobody picks a political position because they enjoy the idea that it will cause others to suffer, huh? Or is that not "bad guy" enough for you?

I gave you a link in post 72 that was 20 years old already pointing out then that it was offensive.

Here's the thing, you don't want to accept a twenty year old writing guide and a dictionary as authoritative enough? Find something with better authority making the opposite claim, then. Find a writing source that isn't Stormfront or my drunken uncle's Facebook rants, but rather a respected, no ties to white supremacists or white nationalism that uses "Moslem".

I already gave you one on the previous page. The American Moslem Foundation still calls itself just that: American Moslem Foundation. That's what it still calls itself. That's the name they put on their home page in big bold letters. It's not a nickname given by some supposed unspecified nazis on some unspecified site with some unspecified auto-censor.

As I was saying on the previous page notion that it somehow means "evil" or "unjust" is just stupid. No Muslims would have called their organization "the evil unjust foundation".

Then the United Negro College Fund proves that negro is not a derogatory term for blacks.

In fact, some old blacks seem to find it less offensive than "black". The United States Census Bureau included Negro on the 2010 Census, alongside Black and African-American, because some older black Americans still self-identify with the term.

But that's not the point. The point was that it somehow means "evil or unjust". In fact, the claimed similar word doesn't even exist, and no actual muslims seem to have heard that it means "evil or unjust."

Meanwhile for "negro" the only thing is that some people find it offensive, and even then generally only when used by whites. Nobody claimed that "negro" means evil or unjust.

So the two are not exactly equivalent.

Actually, he's saying that it's the lesser of two evils, as in, the alternative is more evil in his view, not that he's looking to do evil and oppose good.

No, he quite literally said they might as well go all in on evil because "There is practically no downside, as you are damned if you do, damned if you don't."

Doncha just love it when someone from Germany tells you how people in your own country really think about some term he read on the internet? Like...akshooully some blacks prefer negro he says, having never, ever tried to use that term to a black person's face.

And it isn't censored here for the same reason that the vast majority of derogatory slang terms for any group of people aren't. Nobody is capable of making any changes to anything they didn't think of putting on the list way back when Randi owned the place.

So it wasn't widely considered offensive when Randi owned the place, unlike, say, ******?
