WinXP - Service Pack 2 Upgrade and Problems?

I'll take back the OK. My internet access has slowed to a crawl (via broadband) have uninstalled and everything is back to normal

Hm. Just hit a couple of snags myself- one fixed- a friend just got adsl. He could not get online with it. Told him to turn off Windows firewall. Guess what?

The second one is more complicated.
I have, (had) a Canon CanoscanD1250 UTF flatbed scanner.
I tried to use it today. No go. When I looked for the folder with the installed software, it was as empty as mother Hubbard's cupboard- all files gone!

No problem, I have the install CD. But the software will not load-
"config.nt this system cannot run DOS or Windows 16bit applications. " Sixteen bit??
Log onto Canon UK and download up to date drivers and software. (2003). Same deal. I now have a scanner I can't use.

nb-Abramis- If it's saying "Explorer" is having problems, it presumably means the Operating System rather than Internet Explorer.

Soapy sam - Yeah I know that it is the OS. I just found out whats causing the problems. It´s that darned Windows Update trying to contact the Internet every 60 minutes, and that causes the system to freeze. It is now disabled... he he he.... yes.... fixed it..... Damn you, Microsoft.

Anyway, thanks for the input, Soapy sam.

Found out what was causing the problem with the speaker quietness, [squirms] found a volume control [/squirms]. In my defence, the volume control was quite small and quite well hidden.

I'll get me coat.....

I had that exact same problem until I discovered that Realplayer screws around with Windows volume control.

Heh, I spent three days on the new computer trying to figure out why sound wouldn't come out the speakers when it would work OK through the headphones. Then I accidentally unplugged the headphones...

If Buddha had owned a computer, I'm sure he would have attained enlightenment several years earlier. They teach us to be humble. Enraged, embarrassed and humble.

For anyone with a Canon D1250 USB scanner. There are conflict problems under SP2. I just talked to Canon tech support. I was the second person in twenty minutes reporting a problem with this scanner, though they differed somewhat.
I had tried editing config.nt , but it seemed ok- lots of buffers and file handles available. Device manager showed the scanner as functional.

Short version. Uninstall the device. When I tried to reinstall the driver from the CD, Windows went online to M$ and downloaded a patch for the scanner. Too bad if you don't have internet access.
M$ at it's caring best.

Follow up.

I had an email reply from Microsoft who say it is Canon who have the update patch. So why did my browser download it from a Micro$oft site I wonder?

Because the Microsoft are happy to host updates for other companies. I get my video card driver updates, sound card driver updates, even my motherboard bios updates from Windows Update.

I recently downloaded and installed SP2 on my home computer. Since I wasn't using a firewall beforehand, I have decided to try out the Sp2 firewall. Has anyone else been using it? One thing I don't understand - the only Exception I have listed is for AOL; I can still use different browsers and play poker without the firewall interrupting. Now why wouldn't I have to list those programs in the Exception list?

A firewall works by IP address and port, not by application.

Most will go ahead and let packets back if YOU kick the door open sending them out (i.e. connect to a service). What they primarily block is unsolicited connections to your computer as if it were a server.

I just patched up (after reinstalling from scratch to fix several pesky problems that had developed over the last half a year), and it seems to run about the same afterwards.
