I'm just about to upgrade my two WinXP (Pro) PCs - anyone had problems (beacuse of the upgrade ;) ) either with the installation or after?

FWIW, two out of three XP SP2 upgrades I know of have cause major troubles, requiring complete reinstall of the OS.

What the heck, you need the practice...GO FOR IT! :D

You, too? I installed it a couple of days ago and got a Blue Screen. Error message indicated a HD driver failure (umaxtordrv.sys or somesuch). Repeated power off/power ons didn't help. Finally had to interrupt the boot sequence to go into the BIOS setup so I could boot from the installation CD. Tried the repair option, and that didn't work, so I ended up going the reinstall route. Held my breath the whole time - was it going to trash all my application and data files? - but it reinstalled cleanly; just had to reset a few display options.

The next morning, I had an alert in my system tray telling me a new update has arrived. "Would you like to install it now?"

Yeah, right...

Warning: If you don't have your original OS installation CD, you're biking without a helmet. At the very least, back up ALL your apps and data before starting.

Just finished upgrading both PCs.

One required a 92Mb download the other just over a 100Mb, even though both were completely up-to-date with service packs.

Absolutely no problems, quick, simple, recognised my Zonealarm and McAfee apps and everything I’ve tried so far is working fine.

Oh, shut up.

One can't help wondering if any of the problematical upgrades involved original installations of- how to put this- irregular provenance?

I think this is how Microsoft works. Set things up so that some people have problems, and some some don't.

The ones who have no problems get to feel superior to those who do and say, "Ha! You luser!" The ones who do have problems grumble but think, "I'm gonna get you next time." And then, when they have no problems, they're so impressed that they love Microsoft for life! Because now they get so say, "Ha! You luser!"

I installed it on 4 PCs at work today, and I'm waiting for it to finish downloading here at home now. No problems so far. I've heard bad things about the firewall, but I don't intend to use it anyway. There's obviously the odd problem here and there (you can't use the 'sound' thing in the Word 2003 web tools toolbar now...!) but I've heard nothing drastic yet.

Cheers,
Rat.

I've only had problems with the service pack turning on the Firewall. Most of my support is done remotely.

The PCs are mainly Dell and I have no major problems.

Sir, I take offense at your rude implication. I shall have to ask you to step outside on the field of honor. As the offended party, I have the privilege of choosing the site and weapons.

Site - Dunsinane Castle, main parapet, tomorrow, dawn.
Weapons - Axes.

I might also add, in response to your most insulting implication, that my OS came pre-installed on the computer when I bought it eight months ago, from a reputable company whose name rhymes with "Swell". Which is what you will have under your eye when I catch up with you. :p

You must be the one in three for whom it decides to work OK...

Lucky bastard! :D

Or is it something to do with personal hygeine...?

I wonder? My OSs are all genuine, all my apps are and I have the right number of copies or licences for all the software I have on my PCs.

I wonder if that's the problem? It's been known in the past for OEM versions of software to have subtly different versions - customised in some way. Perhaps Microsoft have overlooked the customisation, and trashed something.

One of my sons has a friend with a pirate copy of XP. He couldn't open IE without a storm of hijacks rendering it unusable. I tried to download some updates for him from Microsoft. They were way ahead of him, it recognised that it was an illegal copy, and refused to download. I don't know why he persisted with it. The amount of grief it was causing far outweighed the cost of just buying a legitimate copy.

The problem is you have refused to download any updates. A clean install won't have any security patches on it. Use at your peril. You have an option to accept or refuse any patches available.

Haven't refused - just waiting for the weekend when I'll have time to deal with possible glitches. At least I'm running ZoneAlarm, two antivirus packages, SpyBot S&D, and a partridge in a pear tree, so I'm not terribly concerned about Bad Things happening in the meantime.

But, yeah, good point - when you reinstall your OS, you have to assume you've lost all your previous security updates.

I know an IT friend of mine created bootable installable WinXP CDs with SP1 already incorporated. It was a godsend for friends still on dial-up who had to do a re-install. They didn’t have to wait 3 or 4 days to be able to download all the latest patches etc. Don't know legal-wise if it was 100% OK - but you did still have to activate your copy.

Sam - I was there. Where were you, thou base and shag-eared villainous poltroon?
