Windows 11

Ok, but shouldn't it be more obvious?

They did put a search box in Win11, so I guess they finally did figure that out.
There was a readme file in the Windows folder of Windows 95 that listed all of the Win-key shortcuts, and then it was never officially mentioned again. I think Microsoft assumes that everyone who uses Windows is over 35 and read that file.

So a lot of follow ups. HTML inherits the "/" separator from previous markup languages. I *believe* these came from people used to unix programs like nroff, LaTex etc. I may be wrong.

Windows. Download Notepad++ for all your editing needs.

There are many many C++ editors and development environments and many excellent ones, including some of the most powerful, absolutely free. I'm sure there have been some threads on people getting up to speed with C/C++. My skills in that area are way out of date.

That actually worked and thank you, but still no dos edit.

Depending on your version of Windows, you may not have the Edit command. It's a legacy 16-bit program that is incompatible with 64-bit systems.

As noted above, there are many alternatives out there (not just Notepad). I cast another vote for Notepad++ (https://notepad-plus-plus.org/) that supports many formats, customisation etc, but at its heart is just a damn good text editor.

I have no problem with plain old Notepad, but it just doesn't do the things I want like quickly creating ASCI art, because when it reaches a blank line, it shoots to the left and you have to add all those spaces yourself, but I guess I could copy and paste all those spaces myself.

Also, I think notepad limits the number of lines in a file, while edit didn't... I think.

How many lines are available to use in Notepad++?

Notepad has a file size limit, which I found out when I took a call from someone who didn't understand why he couldn't open his 86Gb mainframe data dump in Notepad.

That sounds like a z/OS system dump, no? If he's trying to open it on a PC with Notepad I question his ability to read the bloody thing. If he knows enough to read it he should either stick with IPCS on the mainframe or use the free IBM toolkit - (hint https://uk.crucial.com/store/systemscanner)

Linux is a more recent adaptation of the earlier Unix operating system and it's Linux that runs a lot of the internet. And, yes, Unix and Linux use the forward slash. The web also uses the forward slash but off the top of my head I'm not entirely sure if that was driven by being compatible with Linux or not. Even though Linux hosts a lot of web sites it's also not uncommon to have websites hosted by Windows servers. Web sites hosted by windows will still use the forward slash for web sites.

And an awful lot of unpredictable things will try to just correct it if you use the wrong one so it can be hard to tell what the "real" convention is.
Pretty much the entire early web ran on Unix, Nexus was created on a NeXT.

Notepad++ auto-inserts spaces when you add a new line.

I miss the EDIT (not edline) and QBASIC dos programs in the old windows.

When you search for the dos "edit" program online, all I got was this one page explaining that all you have to do is write "edit" in Win10's START search, and it'll pop right up.

Maybe I'm missing something, but there is NO FREAKIN' search in Win10 START.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH @$#%&*!!

I know I can use Notepad, but there are some things you can't do with it like create asci art quickly that's viewable in a browser. For example, when you go down a page and hit an empty line, the cursor moves back to the far left with Notepad, but it doesn't do that in Edit. It goes straight down the page.

I used to use it to write ALL my html webpages.

Also, I can't find the damn Movie Maker in Win11, but since I still have a computer with Win10, I really don't care about that, and I know you can use the Photos app, but it doesn't do anything like what MM can do.

Thank God they didn't get rid of Paint, but I've heard that it won't be upgraded any more, and that probably means they'll eventually get rid of that too.

Other than all that, I love Windows and Win11

I like the freeware Notepad++. I don't know if it can do what you're describing here, but it's got lots of options (especially for coders) so maybe. It's definitely better than Notepad.

Last Windows 11 update changed default browser to Edge, default Chrome search-engine to Bing and changed "restore previous tabs" setting to "always open Bing on startup"
So they basically messed around with third-party software settings to push their ****** products. This is pathetic, predatory and should be illegal.

How do you deal with Microsoft's crap on a daily basis? Any similar stories?

Yikes!

Well, except none of those are 3rd party settings. Chrome uses the windows internet options for its default behavior, including preferred search engine, and Edge is the default browser if a choice isn’t selected in settings. This sounds more like a user profile corruption issue that led to defaults being set.
