Will tariffs make America great?

These are the remote islands on Trump's tariff list, and what they export

Apparently the Heard and McDonald Islands exported $13,590 in goods to the US and it fell mostly in the categories of electrical equipment and appliances, computer and electronic programs, and transportation equipment. Who knew what those penguins were up to?

For Norfolk Island, it seems most of the exports fell under the category of "goods returned".

Many of the other territories were similar. I can see a lot of thought by some very intelligent people went into creating the tariff list.
Let there be war!

Now that Trump has chickened out of letting the public see $2,000 price stickers on iPhones you have a situation where the most valuable imports from China and Vietnam come in tariff-free while the the UK (which actually has a trade surplus from the US) faces a 25% tariff on its biggest seller, cars.

It's almost as if there was no grand plan and instead a tariff enthusiast is simply flailing around blindly to try and put out the fires caused by the threat of tariffs.

I heard the supposed imports from the Heard & McDonald Islands were an administrative error, four shipments incorrectly entered, two from the UK & two from China.

Lutnick says that the tariff exemption on electonics is temporary
The pause on USAID was temporary. It's been temporarily burned to ashes and the ashes ploughed into the ground and the ground sown with salt. But only temporarily.

Does he mean that kind of temporary?

Let's see, today is an odd-numbered day, so tariffs will be ...
But is today Opposite Day?

Those of us who are actually trying to run businesses and actually supply useful goods and services are basically dead in the water while the on-again, off-again tariffs upend our supply chains and customer bids on literally a daily basis. We're all just sitting here not making money while the inept Tariff Posse in the White House tries to figure out how global commerce works.

I'm sure someone will explain it to them, they're just waiting for the finger puppets to arrive. What's that? They were coming from China and are held up at customs until additional charges are paid?

It's been suggested more than once, that trump's daily mood on tariffs is largely governed by the bond markets cratering. At one point US treasuries were offering a higher interest than those of that posterboy of economic stability, Greece.

I haven't been keeping close watch of the news since there's nothing I can do about it. We're all just passengers on the bus that Trump is driving. He keeps swerving back and forth. What will he do tomorrow? Are the tariffs on again or back off? Which companies get a special exemption from the highest tariffs?

I saw this editorial in the Wall Street Journal (it didn't seem to be paywalled):

Late Friday his own Customs and Border Protection (CBP) department issued a notice listing products that will be exempt from Mr. Trump’s so-called reciprocal tariffs that can run as high as 145% on goods from China. The exclusions apply to smartphones, laptop computers, hard drives, computer processors, servers, memory chips, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and other electronics.

The CBP notice takes the tariff rate on these products down considerably. Barron’s calculates that the exceptions cover $385 billion in 2024 imports. That includes $100 billion from China, or 23% of U.S. imports from that country. The tariff rate falls to 20% on the newly exempted Chinese exports.

The press spent Saturday reporting this without cavil from the White House. We weighed in with a WSJ.com editorial on Saturday afternoon, noting that this meant a big reprieve for powerful tech companies, though not for small manufacturers.
Now Trump seems to be sensitive to the idea that Apple and other powerful companies are getting special treatment.
Finally Mr. Trump jumped in late Sunday afternoon. “NOBODY is getting ‘off the hook’ for the unfair Trade Balances, and Non Monetary Tariff Barriers, that other Countries have used against us, especially not China which, by far, treats us the worst!” he wrote. “There was no Tariff ‘exception’ announced on Friday. These products are subject to the existing 20% Fentanyl Tariffs, and they are just moving to a different Tariff ‘bucket.’”

Mr. Trump blamed the press for reporting the exceptions that his own CBP had announced, albeit in stealth fashion at 10:36 p.m. Friday. And he announced that his Administration is taking a “look at Semiconductors and the WHOLE ELECTRONICS SUPPLY CHAIN” for potential tariffs.

So what happened and what’s the real policy? Who knows? Perhaps Mr. Trump didn’t like the reporting that tech giants like Apple and its shrewd and capable CEO Tim Cook were getting exceptions. Other winners in the CBP notice would be Dell Technologies’ Michael Dell, Jensen Huang of Nvidia, and the executives and shareholders of Hewlett-Packard and TSMC.
They go on to point out how this makes a politician pick economic winners and losers, and not business success in a somewhat level market playing field.

It seems like the constant panic flip-flopping of tariffs is happening far too fast for any sane business decisions to be based on them. It looks as if the only thing it might manage to do is pump the markets down and up again at a remarkable rate, allowing billions which used to be in ordinary people's pension funds to be pumped into the pockets of Trump's pals.

I always have a problem when people use sources that make basic mistakes with the facts " Apple and its shrewd and capable CEO Tim Cook were getting exceptions" I think you will find that his name is "Tim Apple".

If Trump was serious about bringing factories and jobs back to the USA, surely he'd be keeping tariffs on iPhones, laptops and other high-value products and scrapping those on products made in sweatshops?

That would make this more expensive than the real thing:
