In too many conversations I have had with USAians over the years, including long terms expats in Europe and whatever their politics, I've been confronted with the firmly held belief that social policies = socialism = communism.
That makes for mostly boring and sometimes infuriating conversations …

It seems strange since it's about you, but it's also not about you. It's an identity politics thing. You can't have an in-group without an out-group. It doesn't have to make sense, it just establishes a gradient along which one can pin an us or a them, and allow all the social mechanics of peer pressure and such to take root. Are you with us or them? Well, mate, which is it?
