This would be a good point if we accept the premise that party acts as a monolithic hive mind.

Which is also a rather simplistic way of looking at things. Which also seems to be a common thread.

As you've been arguing against individuality, and claiming the party is/should be aimed from the top-down "developing the next leader", I'm glad that you're beginning to recognize your monolithic hive mind idea of how the party operates is simplistic. Hopefully soon you'll begin to recognize it as not only simplistic, but wrong.

If we ignore that opportunity is part of the process and accept the premise that they were trying to break Clinton rather than Clinton just crapping the bed it just accepts the premise that being a keynote speaker is significant.

It can make you or break you, but for it to do that it has to matter.

The idea that can only break someone is nonsense to the point of endangering credibility. It's a pretty good sign I'm not in a good faith discussion.

We have no evidence that it made anyone, but we have evidence that it almost broke someone.

Does anyone remember President Mario Cuomo? How about President Ann Richards? Julian Castro? Elizabeth Warren? Barbara Jordan? All keynote speakers for the Democratic Conventions, so if your idea held water we wouldn't have only Clinton and Obama on the "keynote speaker to Presidential Candidate with party backing" pipeline.

To SG:

It is not my responsibility to "find a better candidate" for the Democrats. The fact that they did not is on them. They failed. That is a bullcrap cop-out argument.

And the last post I saw wondering why out of so many thinkers on this board none will understand how we are helping the Republicans by complaining about Biden, get over yourself. You are the only one making these arguments, including most of the people polled again and again.

The Democrats dropped that ball, not us. Seriously, what a lame argument..."Think of someone better then! Neener neener" I mean it's really comical.

I'm tired of this. I have one more stop to make.

Don't get mad at me, I'm just the messenger. And for the record, that's not my argument. What I'm saying is if there isn't a better candidate stop badmouthing the one we have.

It's not me as in my idea, it's me pointing out the evidence about how social media marketing works.

People here want to voice their opinion about Biden's age and I want to voice my knowledge/opinion about how messages are amplified on social media. This is an area of science I've paid attention to for years.

Think the GOP isn't already running with this talking point?

Red State from a year ago: Even the New York Times Is Now Amplifying Concerns About Biden's Age and Incoherence
Here's their BS to go with the story:
It’s intriguing that those questions are coming now, prior to the midterms. I thought Democrats would wait until after the midterms for the push against him, but it may be starting early because they are so unhappy with Biden’s performance. Democrats are afraid they’re going to get wiped out in the midterms, in some measure because Joe Biden is so bad; he provides no real guidance to the party and doesn’t seem to know how to right the ship of state that he’s left to founder on the rocks.
None of that is true. And Biden demonstrated it by his outperforming the polls in 2022.

So do Democrats really see Biden as an increasingly incoherent old fart?

Are they being influenced by these GOP messages, the amplification being bounced back and forth?

Are we going to be saying after the election in 2024 that Biden didn't counter the ageism well enough, it was his fault?

Or maybe Democrats and other liberals should look a little closer at how ineffective we are at marketing.

When the complaint is that there aren't better candidates because the party has lacked foresight, this isn't much of a response. That Biden probably is the best candidate is not a sign of a healthy party.

That's the thing. I and a lot of people view this site as a place to converse rather than an advertising platform for political views. Calling it social media in the same sense as twitter doesn't really play given this is a pretty isolated corner. There is no going viral here and there isn't nearly the level of observers. It's more a closed room.

Also, if I'm more concerned with the influence of my opinion rather than speaking my mind I am admitting to a sort of fraud on the reader. It's deceitful to engage in advertising while presenting myself as giving my honest opinion.

Like those people who took money to say nice things about Bloomberg back before Warren dunked him into oblivion. Shameful behavior.

Or maybe Democrats and other liberals should look a little closer at how ineffective we are at marketing.

What makes marketing ineffective is not considering criticism and ignoring the obvious. Biden's age is a problem. The age of the party as a whole is a problem because they just aren't going to have a solid grasp as to the realities of the next generation. Lack of candidate development is a problem. These are related.

Obama and Mayo Pete are an interesting contrast in that they both when somewhat obscure got the "this guy is going places" boost. One thrived, one is floundering.

Looking closely at why would seem important, but I don't think the party right now is comfortable with the conclusion that they need to not be fighting yesterdays battles and limiting themselves by looking for candidates with law enforcement and military cred when that hasn't much worked for them. Which is at least a small part of where they misfired this time.

I mean, Clinton was dodging the draft and Obama was probably doing coke of the back of his draft card. John Kerry was a decorated vet. One of these three was crippled by their military past and the GOP's last two presidents were a daddy got me in the reserves guy and a guy who has said he thinks people who serve in the military are fools. That whole mentality needed to go way before 2020.

It certainly seems like a lot of Dems and other liberals just can't help themselves. Kind of like Jason Whitlock going on the Tukker Carlson White Power Hour to complain about black people, they want to be seen as "brave truth speakers" while hoping no one notices the actual harm they're doing.

It's not a GOP thing - it's just reality. 65% of democrats do not want him to run again- in several recent polls, same as last year. How excited will voters be? How much support would the senate races get? How will Biden manage the Presidency and campaign at the same time? His schedule is already very light. He just physically can't do it.

New poll shows almost exactly the opposite of this figure.

While Biden’s approval has remained consistent among Democratic voters, at 77% approval in January and 78% in February, the share of Democratic voters who think Biden should be the 2024 nominee has jumped by 13 points since the January Emerson poll, from 58% to 71%. Less than a third (29%) of Democratic voters think someone else should be the Democratic nominee in 2024.

https://emersoncollegepolling.com/n...ic-voters-think-biden-should-be-2024-nominee/

One thing that stands out to me is among young voters (18-35) an even HIGHER percentage think he should be the nominee at 85%!

Another oddity, their polling shows Biden behind Trump by 4 points. But ahead of either DeSantis or Haley should they win the GoP nom.

538 rates Emerson polling at an A-.

RFK Jr. talking about running against Biden.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is considering running for president in 2024, challenging President Biden for the Democratic nomination, and he says his wife approves.

"I am thinking about it yes. I have passed the biggest hurdle, that my wife has greenlighted it," Kennedy told a crowd in New Hampshire on Friday, according to reports.

Not quite sure what the 65% of democrats were thinking. It may well be that they are so distant from politics daily that they are thinking in terms of their own choice only. The tendency is to move along, get rid of all of the Trump era baggage.

If you phrase the question as "who should we run to beat Trump?" then Biden would get more support.

If you think of beating DeSantis then the answer is not Biden.

Marianne Williamson is announcing her candidacy against Biden. Speech is on CNN. Sounds like a rant. Can she be taken seriously?

Probably not. I remember her from the last time around in the debates. She would make a statement where 80% of it made sense and the other 20% was just plain crazy. The sensible stuff just leads up to the crazy.

So RFK is going to split the crazy vote.

Should provide us with some brief amusement. In this particular case the apple rolled far from tree and into the swamp.

Agreed. The only thing he may have going for him is the Kennedy name and that doesn't carry anywhere near the political weight it once did. He's an anti-vaccine, vaccines = autism, nut job. He is major Covid 19 conspiracy theorist. He is an environmentalist so that is one thing he has going for him. He's never held any political office.

RFK JR was a 2004 election truther too, although most people have forgotten that one.

Questioning the validity of elections is anti-American, but then it's you so no surprise.

Questioning validity is fine. Plenty of shady stuff going on and it's healthy to get it out in the open. Nixon, Tilden and Gore are free to whine about it and we can acknowledge they got hosed and that's good.

Actively rejecting the legitimacy of an election is a different thing. Peaceful transfer of executive power is going to outweigh worries about election shadiness if the election is even barely plausibly an accurate outcome.
