Why so much attention to the Amanda Knox/Raffaele Sollecito case

Why so much attention to the Amanda Knox case?

No, he doesn't. Just because the words are different doesn't indicate the meaning is incompatible. It's ironic because (in this case) it's not true and thus not relevant.
Yes he does.
Matthew Best said:
Finding out that your daughter [,Amanda Knox,] is a whore probably is a parent's nightmare, let alone the whole world finding it out.
Unless he's referring to another instance in which the world found about a father's daughter's sexual behavior.
Then perhaps it would be a good time to start making sense?
Now would be a good time to learn and of course, stay on topic.

I suspect it was the word you chose that Cain did not.
As I've said over and over, that's the word often used when one's (male or female, but mostly female) promiscusous sexual behavior becomes public knowledge. Do you agree with this, Y/N?

That word has been used over 57,500 times on the JREF. Never once, from what I can see, did it ever illicit an emotional gut reaction or a pack-animal response, like the one CouldonUK describes. Nor is anyone referring it to as "childish abuse," "nasty," or "desperate for attention of any kind" in other articles where the term is used. http://www.divinecaroline.com/112939/91218-most-notorious-whores Why is the response so different when Matthew Best or I use it to describe Amanda Knox? Indeed, that is what the OP asks.
If you are actually aware of the circumstances in which that information became public and the actual correct information that was distorted (if not wholly invented in Barbara Nadeau's case) and then propagated throughout the free world despite it being untrue you shouldn't be surprised you were corrected it on it and that attitude treated disdainfully.
I was not corrected on it because there was nothing to correct as already mentioned.

However just reviewing your posts I've a suspicion you are the poster child for this thread: the uniformed person whose interest was mostly in the (original) tabloid (and tabloidish) presentation of the 'facts' which were for the most part completely divorced from reality, at first by ILE and the Perugian prosecution and then by the fevered imaginations and half-truths relayed by the media.
Wrong. My "interest" (being overwhelmed by AK posts) of the AK case came through the inundation of AK topics of this forum by AK groupies

So I suspect you actually don't know the circumstances and the correct information and are probably not quite as sanctimonious, severe and heartless as you're coming across. :)
It's not that I don't know. It's that I don't care. And of course, these breaches of kmortis's mod warnings have been reported. :)

enduring mystery

Can you understand why her family say Meredith has been forgotten?
CoulsdonUK,

As you well know, many pro-guilt commenters have argued that it is terrible that Meredith has been forgotten. I therefore found it ironic that Meredith was unmentioned in this thread, even as people insulted Ms. Knox and impugned the motives of those interested in the case. RandyN correctly noted that at least one commenter here scoffed at the injustice of being falsely imprisoned for four years. Of course this injustice is actually larger, is it not? Raffaele Sollecito was also imprisoned for just as long. Sometimes he, too, is forgotten.

But my praise was for RandyN’s whole comment, not just his observation about Meredith. True, no one within Italian law enforcement has been punished. There are many reasons for this IMO. In their 2007 report on Italy Amnesty International wrote, “There was no independent police complaints and accountability body. Policing operations were not in line with the European Code of Police Ethics, for example in the requirement for officers to display prominently some form of identification, such as a service number, to ensure they could be held accountable.” Further it is undisputed that Ms. Stefanoni falsely indicated that no follow-up blood tests had been done on the famous blobs; undisputed that she misstated both the amount of DNA and the means by which it was determined on a key piece of evidence; undisputed that she stored another key piece of evidence in such a way that it rotted and rusted away; undisputed that she found stutters in convenient. I do not mean to imply that a lack of police/prosecutorial accountability solely an Italian problem, only that the lack of convictions with respect to this misconduct is an unconvincing metric. Why there is not more outrage over this and other (and less concern over the number of intimate partners a young woman has had) is an enduring mystery.

My point is simply that no one ( except AK ) could possibly know if the number is accurate. The overwhelming feeling by her supporters that it must be true, for whatever reason, does not make it more likely to be so ..

Remember where you are.

Hang on, as I recall it was certain tasteless persons who originally called Amanda Knox a "whore".

Other people have pointed out that according to the available facts this abuse of Amanda Knox's character is factually false. Going by the available evidence she had a statistically normal love life for a person her age.

Now you're trying to position yourself as the Skeptic Police and reprimanding people for the entirely imagined sin of thinking "it must be true" (even though nobody said that) just because it's the position best supported by the evidence? That's just silly. It's up to the people who want to make libellous remarks to substantiate their accusations, not up to the reality-based community to refute said accusations beyond all doubt.

Your post reflects a very strange and mistaken understanding of what skepticism is and what this place is for.

Now can we please just put UR on ignore for posting nothing except worthless trolling and move on? I believe they only do it for attention and if you deny them that, they'll move on in search of someone else to annoy.

evidence

Remember where you are.
I would have thought a skeptics forum would be interested in actual evidence, but that inference may or may not be justified. Those of us who provided the number gave background information and explained reasons, and no one has offered any evidence to the contrary.

Your choice of words ("irrefutable" and "overwhelming") has been inaccurate. No one but you even used the word "irrefutable." Only a small number of people here commented on the number of Ms. Knox's intimate partners, and one of them (Kaosium) only joined this conversation recently. The topic might not have even arisn if the word ***** had not been used.

Here I thought we were discussing your (uninvolved) interest in the case, which mainly appeared to be driven by an unhealthy willingness to believe tabloid accounts and make judgements based upon them. Let us just say you're not the first one!

However you've extinguished any benefit of the doubt I may have had in your 'interest' in either the case or the ones interested in it.

Laughable. You don't care so much you have been desperately searching the forum for other uses of the word. LOL. Did you check each one for context and 'emotional gut reaction'? When can we see the results?

OK - so you decline to justify yourself. Fine. We can move on without you and continue the discussion raised by the OP, to which you clearly have nothing of interest or value to contibute. Katody Matrass was right.

Here I thought we were discussing your (uninvolved) interest in the case, which mainly appeared to be driven by an unhealthy willingness to believe tabloid accounts and make judgements based upon them.
All you had to do was read the thread, thread title and kmortis's mod box warning and realize I have nearly no intereset in this case.
Also, this is NOT the thread to discuss the material of the case. Only uninvolved peoples' interest in it.
Replying to this modbox in thread will be off topic  Posted By: kmortis

Then why are you attempting to answer the question of why others are interested?
Because I am interested in public opinion/attitude change/attitude formation/persuasion.

However you've extinguished any benefit of the doubt I may have had in your 'interest' in either the case or the ones interested in it.
Why did you think I cared about the case when I specifically said I didn't?

Please discuss this with anglolawyer because he has an entirely different take on it.

I've been through this over and over and I already said I don't like repeating myself.

There are other examples, one in this very thread, where someone said the exact same thing about the exact same thing (knowledge of daughter's premsicuous sexual behavior being made public) and it never got described as "childish abuse"

One isn't about Amanda Knox, so no pack-animal behavior. The other is said by a pro-Knoxer so it's "ironic." The third is said by someon who doesn't seem to have any positive attitudes about Amanda Knox, so it's "childish abuse" "cowardly, libellous and reprehensible" "nasty" "desperate for attention of any kind"

I'm certainly not the first one to discover this pack-animal behavior.

Curious indeed.

Please stop ignoring the mods warning. Stay on topic. Take your CT over to that area please.

Other than "a sad troll"? You will probably try to say you didn't really say this, but it won't fool anyone.

Lionking how interesting to see you back.

I find your argument that favors someone who clearly is being abusive towards a child and a parent to be...well....odd.

Please tell us what kept you posting regularly in the Knox thread over the years?

You should be able to provide some enlightenment for a certain style... not participatory... but yet always there none the less.

She seemed to have engaged in a lot of uncommitted sex with different number of partners in a short period of time. I'm not saying this is unusual or "different" but when a woman engages in this type of behavior and it becomes known, often she gets branded--especially by other women--as a "whore."

I'm not saying this is how I perceive her, I'm saying this is how the public likely does due to the information that's been released.<snip>

It's very reasonable to conclude that a father would not like his daughter's sexual behavior to be made public, especially if she engaged in uncommited sex with different number of partners in a short amount of time.

The whore is how she's likely perceived. The trashy refers to her post-arrest behavior.

It's completely irrelevant to this thread. This isn't about the case of Amanda Knox, which I have nearly no interest in. It's about the Public's interest in the Amanda Knox case. Stop derailing.

<snip>I hope this thread can keep those emotions/arguments at bay because this OP topic can bring up some good quality discussion

U.R., I agree with you that this case and cases like it give a lot of people outlets for their prejudices, anger, hatred, misogyny and sexual frustrations. In the first couple of years of the case, there were probably hundreds of thousands of posts on the internet labelling Amanda with the whole spectrum of gender-specific derogatory monikers, including "whore."

(I don't agree with you that women are the most likely to call another woman a whore, but I can't offer the statistics to support my belief.)

I want to believe you when you say you are only observing how Amanda may be perceived by some members of the public. On the other hand, your posts are a little inconsistent -- it's hard to know where your objective description stops and your subjective opinions begin.

Would you clarify whether you, personally, are calling Amanda a "whore?" What is your definition of the term "whore?"

Would you clarify whether you, personally, have anything against those you describe as whores, or are you using that term only to refer to the way other people use it (that is, to have a pejorative connotation about a woman's sexual behavior)?

Finally, the one I'm most curious about -- how do you define "uncommitted sex?" What are your feelings about it? Does the concept of uncommitted sex conflict with your core values?

Thanks, and may we have some good quality discussion!

"Why so much attention to the Amanda Knox case?"

Stupid post. I took it away.

Excellent post and thank you for your stoic response and asking for clarifications instead of rushing to judements (like the Italian press did to Amanda). I'm glad to see you view this topic and my responses to it in an intellectual way and not an emotional one.

Absolutely. Even Amanda's sister couldn't visit her in jail without reading "Amanda is a whore" written on the table.

I'll admit, this is my own belief based on personal experience of hearing women discuss their personal lives. They often use the word "whore" in many ways, lots of time as a term of endearment.

I want to believe you when you say you are only observing how Amanda may be perceived by some members of the public. On the other hand, your posts are a little inconsistent -- it's hard to know where your objective description stops and your subjective opinions begin.
 I appreciate the feedback and asking for clarifcations.

Would you clarify whether you, personally, are calling Amanda a "whore?"
No, and thanks for asking for clarification. If you'll look, contextually, I never called Amanda a "whore." ...the world knows [likely perceives] your daughter as a whore has got to be a fathers worst nightmare. I'm sure they'll be some people who are passionate about the topic who'll say different. Which is fine, as I said, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinsion. But thank you for asking me and not rushing to judgement (like the Italian press did to Amanda.)

What is your definition of the term "whore?"

My definition? Like most people, I use the term loosely (no pun intended). I don't use term to suggest some sort of deviant or excessive sexual behavior (most people don't either), which is why I find people citing studies to be laughable. The term is used dynamically, meaning one can be a complete whore one time and eunich another. There is no operational definition, it's not used in science like some allude to. It's just an opinion, and opinions change.

Why does Amanda often get branded a whore while other girls who have engaged in much more sex don't get branded the term?As I mentioned, it is the disclosure of the sexual information which will make one be described as a whore. The cashier girl at McDonald's could've had sex with 6 dudes in 4 days, but you don't have this information so you wouldn't tell your friend you're at McDonald's with "ugh, she's such a whore." People familiar with the Amanda Knox case have much information on her sexual behavior available to them, so, they will pass judgement.

Would you clarify whether you, personally, have anything against those you describe as whores, or are you using that term only to refer to the way other people use it (that is, to have a pejorative connotation about a woman's sexual behavior)?
Excellent question and no, I don't have anything against people whom I describe as whores (if I do, I elaborate.) As I mentioned, the term is often used in a reference to a recently disclosed sexual encounter. When chatting with my gf, I might allude to a sexual encounter I had in college and she'll say "you were a whore in college I know you were!" I am not the least bit offended. Her dad calls "cochina" when she says she might be pregnant. Of course, no feelings are hurt.

Finally, the one I'm most curious about -- how do you define "uncommitted sex?" What are your feelings about it?
I also use the term a bit loosely (again, no pun intended.) I usually refer to it as sex with a partner with whom one has not verbally committed to. But you can have uncommitted sex with someone you are verbally committed to and committed sex with someone you aren't verbally committed to. Or, I'll refer to it as, while having sex with someone, one would attempt to engage in sex with someone else within a matter of weeks. (The weeks is my arbritary definition.) My feelings about uncommitted sex are about as liberal as they come. If a woman is feeling a surge of libido and she has no steady, there is absolutely nothing wrong with engaging in casual sex (as always, as long as both parties are consenting and don't get hurt.) The thing that will either brand her a "whore" or not is if, how, and to whom she chooses to disclose this information This is absolutely pivotal to a woman's reputation (which they tend to protect). Some women aren't as socially savvy as others and can't control their reputations and will be branded a "whore" just by how she describes her romantic life--College studies on sexual behavior notwithstanding.

eta: you can also have uncommitted sex with someone one night and committed sex with him/her the next. Often ONS's lead to "I really like this person." Anecdotal evidence suggests a lot of relationships form this way.
Does the concept of uncommitted sex conflict with your core values?
Absolutely not. I am slightly amused at the idea of me being a misogynist or have anything against uncommitted sex. It's just further proof (as if more was needed) that people are quick to pass judgement on others without acquring all pertinent information.
Thanks, and may we have some good quality discussion!
Thank you and thanks for not joining the "I have to be indignant about something" crowd.

Thank you for the clarifications, U.R. I had a feeling things were being interpreted rather loosely (no pun intended). ;)

This is an interesting point: "The thing that will either brand her a "whore" or not is if, how, and to whom she chooses to disclose this information" I bet you'll get some feedback on that one.

Just to clarify, I have never in this thread or anywhere else referred to Ms Knox as a whore, or suggested that she should be so described.

It's plain that UnLovedRebel is either having reading or comprehension difficulties or is deliberately misinterpreting what I wrote. In either eventuality it seems pointless to continue engaging him in conversation.

I suppose there's not a rule against deliberately perverting what a poster has said but I can't say I like it and it does seem like trolling behaviour to me.

In any event, the answer to the OP is still up for grabs. If only tsig would return with his evidence of a million dollar PR campaign keeping the case in the public eye! As he hasn't seen fit to do so, I can only presume that he has no evidence and there was no million dollar PR campaign. We'll have to look elsewhere.

This is an interesting point: "The thing that will either brand her a "whore" or not is if, how, and to whom she chooses to disclose this information" I bet you'll get some feedback on that one.
I understand Amanda had little to no control over this. As I said, it won't stop people from passing judgement.

Matthew Best, another intellectual comment thank you for your contributions.

Well, I have a different take on UR's transparent attempt to row back from his or her position of simply hurling gratuitous abuse from the safety of a keyboard, like many other cowardly anonymous persons who think this is what the internet is for, because it's fun - as in this high-minded exchange upthread:

You got to remember here sweetheart, not everyone has the emotional stock invested in Amanda Knox like you do.

You should head to the GS&P section to discuss your supposed psychic abilities and teach us all how you know when someone is "desperate for attention of any kind." It's got to be a lot more fruitful than defending a whore.
So, basic common decency does not come into it - if you take exception to mean and cowardly internet libel it means you must have 'emotional stock' invested in its target.

A great deal of comment about the case has taken this form and I am not surprised to see that UR understands at some level that such conduct is unjustifiable which explains his or her desperate, but nevertheless vain and transparent, attempts to shift the ground.

So, perhaps one of the poll options should have been: because Amanda Knox is a defenceless individual who can be smeared with vile abuse without fear of reprisal.

So, Matthew's earlier post, just as I and Kaosium suggested, was not supporting your position, as you thought (you clearly had an irony bypass somewhere along the line). The pretence that you were making some deep point rather than just calling names to get a buzz just won't wash - sweetheart.

No, not based upon the information presented in this thread, which allows one to compare Ms. Knox with some peer groups. In addition, all four flatmates in Perugia were sexually active, although less information has emerged about their intimate behaviors.
