Why is homosexuality wrong?

Many Christians can only stand back in horror at the pace of cultural change we have experienced over the last few years.
Yep, no more slaves, can't go out west and kill Indians, no more of making people change their religion to yours, yes it is just horrible.

A homosexual is not a homosexual until they engage in same sex sexual BEHAVIOR.

XenonII, when you use a word does it mean exactly what you say it means?

The reason I ask is that I have heard of some people that subscribe to the idea that the definitions of words are generally agreed upon, and often documented by professionals who make the study of words and their meanings a career choice. I suppose it could be thought of as a Lifestyle Choice, but I'm not certain if studying words will cause them to burn in fires fueled by hatred and intolerance for all eternity.

You seem to be offering a definition of the word homosexual which is other than the meaning I have often seen attributed to that English language word. People who are not obsessed with the unfounded and irrational fear and loathing of homosexuals often seem to define homosexual in a different way.

By performing a Google search with the search phrase "define: homosexual" I received these results.

This makes me wonder why the dichotomy exists between your definition of "homosexual" and the definition used by a seeming majority of other persons.

If a person is exclusively attracted in romantic and sexual ways to members of their own gender, the vast majority of people would say that this person is homosexual by nature.

Yet you insist, using capital letters for emphasis, that a person is absolutely, positively, literally not a homosexual person unless they do in fact engage in homosexual activity.

When such a person concludes whatever homosexual activity they may have practiced, and we all do wish to be perfect, do they then revert back to a non-homosexual status until the next time they slip or change planes in Minneapolis?

Also, I assume by your oft-repeated condemnation of homosexuality that you do not consider yourself to be in an active state of being homosexual at this time. But, if you do not mind sharing experiences from your personal life, I was struck with curiosity about whether you might have, you know like once or twice or something, wondered what it might be like. Or had a fantasy. Or something.

You see, I have this theory that there is a very real reason, a nearly sinister reason, why some certain people insist, indeed insist vehemently, that a person can not possibly be homosexual unless they are engaged in intimate behavior of a homosexual nature. I think it is very closely tied to fear. Fear of what may be inside of people. Indeed, fear of what may be inside of people feeling the fear. You know, denial is not just the longest river in Egypt.

I think that somewhere on this planet, if not in fact in this thread, there may be some people that are desperately clinging to the idea that as long as they do not give in to the powerful urges they may feel, as long as they do not actually DO it, they can still maintain a cloak of plausible deniability and continue to insist that they are not homosexual.

What better way to treat a word that makes us uncomfortable, or might force us to face certain inconvenient details, than to change the definition of the word so that all of our troubles conveniently melt away.

I have very vivid and clear memories of having been a homosexual youth. You have no idea how vivid those memories are. I can assure you that there was not a single definition of homosexual that did not coincide with my fantasy life during my agonizing experience of attending a Christian (Catholic) high school. The thoughts that were running through my mind during much of my waking time were not, by any stretch of the imagination, related in any way to heterosexuality. In my opinion I was at that time a gay youth, or, to use terms that might bother you less a homo high school student, a queer kid, light in my loafers, a bit nancy. I'm sure you get the idea.

But you see, and it saddens me to say this, nothing had ever happened during that time frame that would fit the definition you offer for the word homosexual. I know it bothers you if I say I was gay, as you consider that appellation to be misapplied. And now it seems you would say that I was not homosexual either during those horribly frustrating years. So was I just a naughty boy? Or a very naughty boy? Maybe I was a naughty, nasty boy?

I shall anxiously await any clarification you may be able to provide. Conversations are so much more effective when all involved can agree on the meanings of the words they use, don't you think?

You aren't gainsaying God there, now are you, XenonII?

Wow, talk about staying power. People are still quoting XenonII two pages later. It seems that the response to crazy dissipates rather slowly. The question is, is this true about all forms of crazy or just crazy hate speech?

Think of it as food for the search engines. Somewhere somebody is searching for definitions of the word "homosexual". I want there to be something for them to find, and they may not all be visiting IthinkImightbegay.com.

Or think of it as just entertainment. I certainly find it both entertaining and important.

I do think crazy hate speech does have more staying power than say, nutjob conspiracy theories.

Oh, it's better than that... we're occupying his energies here, and so his hatred is less likely to be inflicted on people in the real world. JREF saves the world (for moments at a time anyhow) from the nutters yet again.

Everyone is nonsexual until they are actively having sex, at which point they are heterosexual or homosexual. After they are done with the sex, they go back to being nonsexual. I guess that's Xenon's point.

Good point. Some person struggling with his/her homosexuality and the guilt that society claims one should feel regarding such thoughts may find this thread and see many people, both homosexual and heterosexual alike, taking the pith out of some homophobic bigot and think "I guess I can feel good about myself after all, 'cause the people who say I should feel bad are idiots".

Something I have never heard anyone say, "Geee, today I decided to be H-------sexual".

I certainly appreciate the wonderful sentiments and cogent arguments expressed here by people that are not gay and simultaneously are not bigots. I don't often feel that someone has got my back, so it means more when they do.

Probably better, since we're strangers, if we straight guys are the ones that get your back, as it were.... well anyway....I'm reminded of Vermont bumper stickers. After civil unions came about, those who opposed it began sporting stickers that said "Take Back Vermont." the pro union sorts came back with "Take Vermont Forward," but a few incorrigibles had "Take Vermont from the Back."

Yes it's good that ol' xeno can bring us all together!

He sure is a sweetie pie, but I still wonder if he is as cute and cuddly as his online personna would suggest. Bear, or bear cub, clone or twink? Such a mystery man!

Wow, these new definitions seem especially tragic for bisexuals. Talk about being written out of the plot!
