Who's going to TAM3??

hey, hey, you boys!

There are still (at least) two names I want to add to that list. But it's looking good already!

A lot of favorites from last year, some great new faces. Looking good...

Well, the BrazBabe has convinced me I should go. Now I just need to take care of the details.

(Do I need a visa? If so, can I get one in time? How do I find a hotel in Vegas? How do I book a room there? Are there any tickets left for a flight this late? What is the TAM program? Where should I turn up on the first day? Is my passport still current?

Little details are so uncool.)

DD, last year I organised it in barely a month. Trust me though, I've beenb planning for over three months this year, and I'm still caught up in a last minute panic. Still, that's the mood in which I do my best work. It makes my low bloodpressure rise to normal levels :D

DD Vegas is the town that never sleeps! You don't need a room!!! (or just crash on someones floor....)

DD, on the details (providing you're not pulling my leg)

1. Visa? See below. If your passport is not "machine readable = the data is not in some computer-like bar code) you will need a visa.

If you are a national of the following countries, you may travel on the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP): Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Japan, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. Until 26 October 2004 you may continue to use a non-machine readable passport.

Nationals of the following countries must already hold a Machine Readable Passport (MRP) in order to travel under the VWP: Andorra, Belgium, Brunei, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Slovenia.

for travel after 26 October 2004

After 26 October 2004, ALL passengers intending to travel to the USA on the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) will be required to present a valid Machine Readable Passport (MRP). Alternatively you must obtain a USA Visa prior to travel.

2. Hotel in Vegas--either post to the Roommates thread, e-mail to the Stardust, or check out Hotels.com for a place. You should be able to book online (if you have a credit card)

3. Tickets--well, a quick look at expedia.com showed an intinerary from Copenhagen to Las Vegas, 1-stop each way, leaving 12 Jan and returning 17/18 Jan, for $891.46 USD.

4. TAM Program--see the homepage for this site (you remember, the JREF?)

5. Where to turn up? Turnup. Heck, you make it, I'll meet YOU at the airport and bring you in. The skepchicks can take over from there.

6. Passport current? Hey bub, I've done all the heavy lifting--you can check that much out!!

DD, if flying to LA is cheaper or easier than Vegas, we are caravanning. You are more than welcome. Lodging in LA will be provided.

IF? I'm certain it's cheaper. The price difference comes from the fact that LA is a bigger airport with a larger turnover. So airlines can afford to send larger planes that can carry more people, which reduces the cost. Apart from that, there's not a lot of difference in price whether you switch planes in New York, Chicago or Atlanta.

He's right, DD--a quick look on Expedia.com shows a R/T from Copenhagen to LAX 11 Jan and return 18 Jan/land in Denmark 19 Jan to be about $677.74USD, about $200 cheaper than the Las Vegas flight. If you can work transport and a place to crash on the night of the 11th out with Loon, then this will be your best bet.

DD, you should be able to book over the phone at the stardust.

The only issue with flying to LA is that we're leaving for vegas on the 11th. If you get in early on the 11th or before, we can help you out.

Yikes! In 3 weeks I need to be standing in Vegas. Oh, and I hate and am bad at organizing practical matters. Wonder what my chances are.

Thanks a zillion, Hutch! This is useful stuff indeed!

I've just had a look for my passport and didn't find it. It must be here somewhere, though. (*listlessly pushes aside a stack of stuff on the floor*)

I've got a feeling that it is very good that I'm on vacation as of today. Buying Christmas presents will be the least of my worries.

A million thanks, Loon. Its nice to know I've got options. I haven't checked flight availability yet (in fact, I should be doing that right now), but my main concern is really whether there is any way to get to Vegas at this late stage. For example, from experience I know that flights to the Philippines for the Christmas season should be booked no later than 4 months ahead.

Man, you guys are good at this stuff. Anyone want to organize this trip for me? I'll happily pay $100 to anyone wishing to do so. I trully hate it.

Re: Visas/passports.

I have neither a visa nor (as far as I can determine) is my passport machine-readable.

The Auswärtiges Amt, the German equivalent of the Foreign Office, says on its website that US Customs "may" make exceptions for people from Visa Waiver Program countries on their first visit to the US after 10/26/2004.

I´ll call the US Consulate here in Frankfurt tomorrow to make sure if this is true and what "may" means*. If it is correct, it will save me (and probably some others) the hassle of getting a visa or this new passport thingy in a hurry.

Dang. Why do such problems just pop up on short order every time...?

*I´ve had some trouble recently with the fact that students may register for exams in the dean´s office personally - I thought "may" meant "can if they want to", while it actually meant "should not if they know what´s good for them".

Good advice: Whatever port of call you will be entering the US, get the phone number of your consulate. Be sure to reach the port of call when the consulate is open.

At TAM2, I got some static, because of the incredible sloppy and careless US infrastructure. Never underestimate the stupidity or paranoia of clerk-people.

I will tell the story for a beer. Non-American, please.
