So, are you saying that you do carry an assault rifle slung over your shoulder at all times?![]()
Not when I'm eating or when it interferes with my social agenda.

The military should be abolished.
The military should be abolished, and those rifles should become property of individual citizens. If they then want to sell, or otherwise get rid of them, they can.
The militia military is an interesting idea, but really... It's not necessesary. Whether the rifles themselves are necessary or not should be up to the individual militiamen to decide. I'm sure they're old and ugly enough to do it for themselves.
Isn't the entire point of a militia to have civil defense in the hands of the citizenry, and not controlled by a central war-mongering state? It's a nice idea, but it's silly that it's so embedded in the state apparatus that it's compulsory for every male citizen, which is not necessary. If you have such state control over community defence, you're eventually going to move towards centralisation (first step is disarming the militia), and in the end you'll be no better than any other imperialist power.
300 deaths a year is an asininely small figure, especially considering that most are from suicides.

Duh - the best place to keep your assault rifle is under your pillow.
Does your social agenda include not getting arrested/shot by an over enthusiastic Armed Response Unit?
Abolishing, ok, but the guns can be sold?wtf???
either you use that by taxmoney payed weapon to protect the country and its citizens or you give it back, sure not sell it. what a crazy idea![]()
Living in SA, you are probably inured to violent death more than most but how can you even entertain this idea?
One murder, suicide, or otherwise preventable death every year is one too many.
Durban - The Democratic Alliance on Friday called for a probe into firearms stolen from police stations in KwaZulu-Natal.
This, after police exhibit clerk Thulisani Trevor Mfeka was sentenced to 20 years' in jail for stealing 98 firearms from the Nanda police station and selling them to fellow police officers and the public.
"Give it back" to who? You can't give it back to the taxpayer. The taxpayer, by and large, currently has the arsenal in their possession in any case. Giving the guns to an armory in Bern would be taking them away from those who paid for them in the first place.
The market probably would conspire to see most of the guns remain exactly where they are in any case. I don't advocate selling them overseas, for obvious reasons.
Indeed it does not. Though I haven't given an Armed Response Unit a reason to visit me.
I would say that walking around with an assault rifle over your shoulder would have ARU's buzzing around you like flies.
Running along an underground platform, carrying a rucksack and looking a bit foriegn is plenty enough to get yourself shot, it seems.

We once had an ARU turn up at our house because a neighbour saw us playing with one of those airsoft replicas.
If thinking one preventable death is one too many is naive, then colour me a vivid shade of naive.
Not good to use the Daily Mail. And that is not why he was shot. He was shot because they thought he was a terrorist who had come to the station from a safe house to bomb the place. It was not a random shooting of a guy in the station, it was a cluster in an ongoing operation.
That's why the wise sleep with it in their hands, a finger on the trigger. The occasional discharge caused by this method lets you know the weapon is operable.I just wonder how many have died because their gun jammed at an inoportune moment due to its being full of cotton fibres or goose down, or because their spouse found gun oil on the sheets.

Actually, walking around the acreage with a Bushmaster M4 carbine slung tells the neighbors to head down to the sand pit for some .223 fun.
Switzerland is an asininely small country. With a population of 7.6 million and a death rate of 8.75 per mil, that's roughly 67000 deaths a year in total.300 deaths a year is an asininely small figure
Are suicides less worth preventing than other deaths? I would argue the exact opposite, since they're often people with otherwise a lot of years left to live.Especially considering that most are from suicides.

Wouldn't it be qicker for the depot to keep the whole weapon, then the militia deployment time would be shortened by however long it takes to re-fit a firing pin spring?
