Where Is Ron DeathSantis?

…but it's pretty clear that government inaction, both at the federal and state levels, is the order of the day.?

In some states, that’s possibly true. However, I don’t think that providing over 500 million vaccinations and getting 62% of the US population fully vaccinated in about a year can be fairly called “inaction”. Stipulated that some areas, such as testing supplies, could have been managed a lot better, but I think you condemn with WAY to broad a brush.

Vaccines are available, but not mandatory, in Florida, just like everywhere else in this country. A quick google search shows that Florida has 63% of its population fully vaccinated, right at the national average.

I would agree if you're suggesting higher vaccination rates is probably necessary to get this under control or at least better mitigate the damage, but that would probably require policies that even blue states or Biden aren't requiring at the moment.

Of course. Which is why such a relatively large percentage of the population remains unvaccinated in spite of access to near universal and free vaccines. And I think politics and news sources account for the wide discrepancies across states and regions.

I’m in favor of “mandatory” vaccines for all sorts of activities. I put mandatory in quotes, since very few are arguing for forced vaccinations. Only “mandatory” in the sense that you need one to go to restaurant, or stay in the military, or go to school, or go to a football game, or go to work, or whatever. That’s fair, legal and constitutional.

And Despite omicron, Ron DeSantis remains firmly against lockdowns and vaccine mandates (NPR, Nov 30, 2021)

That's true outside of Florida too.

Hell, I'm in the liberal paradise of Massachusetts and there's no lockdowns, and mandates only apply to city and state workers. It's pretty funny reading the state police union crying that some CHUD cops are getting fired for refusing the vax, but that's only a small sliver of the population.

Also, our local hospital sent out a letter saying that their emergency room is at critical capacity.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/01/03/metro/er-providers-are-overwhelmed-amid-omicron-surge/

Emergency providers warned Monday that they are “overwhelmed” by a holiday-fueled coronavirus surge and urged people to avoid emergency rooms for routine exposure tests or “mild symptoms.”

“Our Emergency Departments are at critical capacity and things will get worse,” the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians and Massachusetts Emergency Nurses Association said in a joint statement.

Beating up on DeSantis is easy, and he's doing a measurably worse job than others, but across the board this country is failing.

From that report:
DeSantis made it clear that residents can test every day, if they choose. But Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo has said that “If you have no symptoms, please don’t get tested.”

Ladapo has also provided new guidance in Florida on COVID testing, including: “Individuals who may have been exposed to COVID-19, but have no symptoms: COVID-19 testing is unlikely to have any clinical benefits.
He should hand in his medical certificate if he has one. The tests were never intended to be for "clinical benefit", you numpty. They are "first response" indicators of COVID infection, a vital tool in identifying and containing the spread before it gets REALLY bad without anyone noticing. You cannot make good medical decisions without good data. So if you had any shred of humanity in you, you would be ensuring these tests are used widely and often.

Oh, wait... It's Florida. Home of the "ME FIRST AND ONLY!" crowd.

Hey, does anybody remember in the Presidential Debates, where it looked like Trump was sick and the GOP claimed others were engaged in conspiracy theories, making things up, and were just desperate, then it came out that Trump had already tested positive for Covid but lied about it?

Just started thinking about that for no reason.

Where was DeSantis? I thought it was a tossup between Covid-19 or... Some kind of emotional/mental breakdown, the kind where he had to be physically restrained by staff. Seriously, this one is right out of the two-bit, tinhorn dictator's playbook. Never admit publicly to any illness or health problem. The people must believe the Great Man is invincible.

Judging by his performance at the manufacturing press conference, DeSantis must have been pretty sick.

I'd rather it was a nervous breakdown. I'd like to see him show up for a presser drunk and swigging from a bottle of tequila, then fire a gun into the ceiling several times while shouting at the voices in his head. Would be a bit hard for his staff to fix.

How so ?

They'd simply insist that it never happened and if media outlets show video of the incident they'll be dismissed as "fake news" outlets not least because FOXNews and OANN would simply never show it.

As far as the majority of the public is concerned, they'd never know it happened because they only look at right wing outlets and/or simply ignore the news. Some would have seen the incident, but they won't change their voting intention because better a tequila-swigging gunman with a psychosis than a Democrat. The only people who would know and care would likely never vote for him anyway.

Hey, but it would be good for laughs!

My only real hope is that DeSantis literally killed off enough of his own voter base to lose reelection.

Hey, but it would be good for laughs!

Oh for sure

I just think it's depressing that for one party it simply does not matter what their "man" does, there never are any consequences because their electorate does not care.

Meanwhile on the other side of the aisle the Democrats have the opposite problem, any whiff of impropriety is electoral death.

I have been ghoulishly tracking this, and the answer is probably not. He won by 30k in a high turnout year without an incumbent. 60k have died.
