Where Is Ron DeathSantis?

Most older folks our parents' age have seen the effects of polio and smallpox and other dreadful diseases. They know this is not a **** around and find out situation with COVID. They know how to take this seriously.

Also, some significant number of the snowbirds (half-a-million in normal times) are from Canada. Canadians in general have been far more receptive to getting vaccinated than some parts of the world.

It's always one of the paradoxes of progress. You get these weird (and usually temporary) movements dependant upon enough people not remembering how bad things used to be.

Smallpox used to be like a fickle Lovecraftian God we just had to live with. It reshaped history like no war or political dynasty could ever hope to. It could just wake up one morning and decide to wipe out your whole family, your whole village, your whole country and you could do so little that the concept of "doing anything" about didn't even apply, it was like doing something about a bolt of lightning from the blue.

Now it's gone. And people, bad horrible people, are not doing the "Well it couldn't have been that bad..." routine with it.

I'm old enough that I may consider a tat on my smallpox site just so it doesn't disappear.

~~weird dream~~ anti-vaxers descending on the CDC to liberate the last remaining Variola.

I know I might seem to defend the conservative side of things here more than most but this feels like another instance where all I see is political posturing. Is he actually out of touch or is he just not making public appearances? Are the state medical leaders actually saying anything about his lack of commitment or leadership in the state, providing resources, feedback, trying to get them what they need? Is there actually something specific people can show he isn't doing?

I am just not blown away by "cases are rising, he should be on TV!!" as if that is some make or break moment. Murphy has been on vacation while our numbers are going wild here in NJ. I don't think that is a better excuse, but I also don't think he is actually hands off during that time either, more like working remote from somewhere else. He also hasn't done anything specific to slow spread here, same as Desantis.

If the story is made up, it will come out. If it is true, I am not sure why it is a problem.

As I've mentioned, my grandmother had smallpox when she was in high school..so about 1923. Her older sister died of scarlett fever when she was four years old in 1903. My great aunt also had it but survived...but it left her deaf. We take for granted so many things that were a scourge to our parents/grandparents. These anti-vaxxers really piss me off.

New to planet Earth? Google "medical opinion of DeSantis". Note that "nonsense" is not a good thing.

Perhaps a documentary illustrating the delicate surgery necessary to make one's tongue fit so well in a con man's butt hole.

I'm just glad that this thread has gotten away from the trolling-type comments that everyone seems so concerned about. Nope, nothing to see here.

As far as DeSantis, this is much shrieking over nothing. He is not in hiding, obviously. Bonus non-troll points for the thread title, btw.

I am referring to the actual topic of the thread. Not his opinions, or if some doctors disagree with them. The nearest I have seen is complaints of no state help from certain mayors in regards to help with expanding testing. Does the state government lack tests to funnel down to high impacted locations? Or should they be creating pop up testing sites in those areas? Not really sure the specifics on how other states accomplish this currently with the huge influx of cases and people trying to test. Or how public appearances like the one from earlier today saying this is the current norm and their is a lack of tests will continue without additional federal supplies helps.

Given how much DeSantis does while actively on duty that I think is harmful, being absent a while is probably a net positive. Why should I complain?

Here is what you asked:

Yes, doctors are telling him they need him to stop sabotaging them.

Again outside of giving the COVID Virus the right to vote or making not having COVID literally against the law I don't know how much more on the disease's side DeSantis is supposed to get before the trolls give us permission to get upset by it without being called "dramatic."

He's literally made doing anything to stop the spread of the disease against the law.

My post is clearly discussing the topic of the thread. There is literally no reason to try to pick a sentence and remove it from context to complain about something else. There is a whole thread dedicated to US covid politics if you want to throw actual links vs google search ideas there.

Yes, I get how you want to narrowly define the topic of the thread to avoid anyone telling the truth.

Doctors are currently telling him, right now, to stop sabotaging their efforts and support them. Deal with it.

Yet another thing where any improvement is tossed on the fires of "Well technically within a very narrow scope of the question..."

COVID cases in Florida increased 948% in the last 7 days, but you got us on a technicality about the procedural According to Hoyle way to ask your version of the question.

*Slow clap* I bet you're proud.

That tells me more about him than almost anything else. What a moron. I bet his wife's oncologist wasn't too happy about that.

They’re probably lying about the cancer too. ******* Republicans are all full of so much **** I can see corn in their hair

Yea, so weird of me to talk about the actual topic while you attempt to avoid doing so because apparently, you are unable to actually point out anything specific. Super surprising. Again, there is literally an entire thread dedicated to the more widespread politics and actions involved in the US. Or you could start a thread pointing out Desantis actions on covid in Florida and argue the policies that you are against. What is the purpose of joining a thread about his absence during a spike in cases and avoiding that conversation? Makes no sense to me.

DeSantis Blames Feds, Slams ‘Hysteria’ as Florida Shatters COVID Records

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) blamed the Biden administration for COVID-19 woes in his state while accusing other state leaders of allowing “hysteria” to reign as they encourage mitigation measures against the virus that he claimed had little basis in sound science.

“In terms of Florida, you look what’s going on in other states, they’re letting hysteria drive them to doing really damaging things. We thought that people had learned,” DeSantis said during his first news conference in weeks on Monday after record-setting COVID-19 numbers spread across the state last month. “They’re closing schools, they’re doing things that should not be done. That is not the way you deal with this.”

Yes, it is the way you deal with this, you science-illiterate *******!

DeSantis is showing the most shrewd right wing PR response to their disastrous approach to covid.

He's doing the Covid Boogie, disappearing entirely during the case climbs and peaks, then bragging during case declines and valleys. I'm sure he'll be back bragging once the post-holiday spike is subsiding, claiming that this decline, which is just part of the obvious pattern of uncontrolled spread in this country, is actually the result of some policy on his part.

ETA: What's actually the better PR response here? Florida could obviously be doing more, but it's pretty clear that government inaction, both at the federal and state levels, is the order of the day. Is it better politics to be on TV during the peak reminding everyone what a failure you are or to go hide out at your vacation spot for a while?
