What's your problem with Glenn Beck?

I tend to dislike anything that increases the level of ignorance in the general public, be it psychics, creationists, homeopaths, or Glenn Beck.

They are basically all the same thing with different subject matters.

Now you´re being unfair to psychics. They´re just greedy - there´s no evidence of any further malice beyond that.;)

I don't like to call Glenn Beck crazy. As someone whose brain chemistry has caused others to call her crazy, I resent the comparison.

Glenn Beck is a wacky morning DJ cokehead turned delusional pundit turned leader of a freaking political movement. He makes Bill O'Reilly look like a moderate, responsible journalist. He has taken cable news past mere alarmist name-calling to a new low of paranoid delusional nonsense using the kind of emotional manipulation that would make JG cry tears of pride.

Salon.com did a great profile on him about a year ago, which I can't link to because I'm new.

Honestly, he'd be hilarious if he wasn't so darn scary.

I do think comparing him to Olbermann is at least partially understandable in that they both rely heavily on appealing to audiences on an emotional level rather than a rational one.

It's been linked to in other threads, but here it is:

Part 2: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/09/22/glenn_beck_two/

Part 3: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/09/23/glenn_beck_three/

Here's a great piece explaining where Beck has learned some of his history:

You're welcome. It's creepy how much of what Skousen warned about is exactly what Beck forewarns on his show. It's as if Skousen's fractured soul lives on through him.

I'd go more towards "terrifying" than "creepy."

While Beck's rhetoric is dangerous, I think it's good to know that Skousen failed to impress anyone significant with his fear mongering. I don't think Beck will ultimately cause anything that's too frightening.

It does put the "Restoring honor" rally into a stark perspective.

He admitted that he was caught in a lie.

I consider this progress.

Freakin A. This is NOT progress. Beck and his supporters will use this instance of Beck "lying" as proof that he owns up to his lies. They can then claim high moral ground saying if Beck were to lie he would admit it. Evidence - see above. Logically, he has not admitted to other lies so he must be telling the truth.

See, the lie about above is not really a lie about anything of consequence, just narrative. This helps inoculate Beck against charges of lying.

Some say that Beck casually had a beer at Cheers after raping and killing a girl while others say he went straight home.

He admits to not fact checking.

He thinks that writing random crap on a chalkboard and circling letters from that random crap to spell a word* is real rational reasoning. Like that means anything. (Look below the big line)

*He's looking for the outcome...he knows the word he wants to magically find, he's just gotta find the other words with the correct lettering to spell the word he's already decided upon.

Oh my God! Look at the letters that I bolded.
Glenn Beck eats poo!

Has Glenn Beck ever done actual productive work at any point in his life? Looking at his career path, it seems like the only thing he's ever been paid to do is talk. He was a failed stand-up comedian, then he became a failed zoo crew DJ before settling in as an AM talk show host.

Seems pretty hypocritical of him to constantly berate people who "don't work".

You want to be careful about the "honest work"" accusation; A lot of Liberal media figures have backgrounds not any better then Beck.

You're right in that Hoover did not implement a spending freeze, but he WAS advised to do so by his treasury secretary Andrew Mellon.

LOL! Well of course conservatives like him were advising that approach, CE. You state the obvious.

And to show how nasty democrats were about him having given that advice, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_W._Mellon "the Roosevelt administration subjected Mellon to intense investigation of his personal income tax returns. The U.S. Justice Department empaneled a grand jury, which declined to issue an indictment. A two-year civil action beginning in 1935, dubbed the "Mellon Tax Trial," eventually exonerated Mellon, albeit several months after his death. Amity Shlaes argues that the prosecution was politically motivated."

That totally puts this clip from Black Dynamite in a new light for me. (Potentially NSFW due to language).

P.S. This movie is hilarious. See it
