I believe John Steinbeck said something similar about the white working class?

I think you may be thinking of Lydon B. Johnson

“If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.”

― Lyndon B. Johnson

Trump's immigration enforcement surges have taken resources and manpower *away* from activities by DEA, the FBI, and even Homeland Security Investigations that were actually dedicated to things like stopping drug trafficking, human trafficking, etc. All to round up people en masse who are mostly not violent criminals. There's even been a push to expand the pool of mostly-non-criminal targets by going after visas, birthright citizenship, the naturalization process, etc.

It was never about "violent immigrants". It is about rounding up arbitrary quotas of people who look and talk funny and making them go away.

Yes, but is the strategy of giving Democratic voters half the country to look down on, something the Democrats did wrong, or something the Democrats did right?
Yes, but is the strategy of giving half the readers of this thread random squirrels to look at in an effort to change the subject something you're doing right, or something you're doing wrong?

It's going to be fun to see how your manufactured grievances play this election season. I'm sure they'll resonate with a lot of voters now that Republicans are in control and everything is going so well.

The same people who blame rape victims because they dress too skimpy are mad they are looked down on for their colossal stupidity. And express that anger by doing something colossally stupid.

Was it Steinbeck or Kerouac who said something like "socialism never took hold in American because the poor see themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires"?

It was Steinbeck misquoted - “I guess the trouble was that we didn't have any self-admitted proletarians. Everyone was a temporarily embarrassed capitalist”

What Democrats did wrong can only be a subset of stuff Democrats actually did. Trying to pivot the discussion to phony Republican narratives about stuff Democrats did is indeed changing the subject.
Democrats are doing that all the time. People are doing it right here in this thread, and have been, across this forum, for years. Hillary Clinton's "deplorables" is an iconic example of the phenomenon.

like, honestly, getting all bent out of shape that calling your opponents nazis is hyperbole when there's a literal white nationalist in charge of immigration doesn't land like it used to. there's anti vaxxers in charge of the department of health firing all the legitimate experts, the doj and fbi are corrupt and hiding pedo rings to protect the president, elon musk broke into the social security database and stole all your personal info, they're stealing every billion that isn't nailed down, and you could go on and on. oh, and now they're getting into gambling on whether or not they'll commit war crimes. it's not hyperbole, this is ◊◊◊◊◊◊.

You all voted for the guy who makes insulting people part of his identity. You reveled in it. Spare us your pissbaby whining.

At least Democrats don't vote for absolute sociopaths who want to burn down the world because Republicans hurt their feelings.

Don't forget that one guy wore a brown suit, ordered a burger with a fancy mustard, and chewed gum. What a psycho.
