Weird Experience

I've been obsessing about death lately. My wife is very spiritual, and yesterday she said, "Why don't you ask my mom (deceased, lived with us for years) for help? I know you're a skeptic, but it doesn't cost you anything". My wife then told me she gets signs from her mom all the time, mostly in the form of seeing license plates, particularly New Mexico. It has something to do with some experiences they had in New Mexico. I rolled my eyes (pareidolia, and all that).

But I said, OK, and mentally asked for a sign yesterday morning. A few hours later, we're walking out of a theater, and we walk down the wrong row of cars, looking for my car, and of course, there's a New Mexico plate. My wife gets all excited, and even I think it's a little strange, because we don't see them much in California (they're bright yellow plates). So we go down another row of cars and there's another New Mexico plate. And this is literally hours after she told me about the license plate thing.

I could laugh it off as coincidence (and no doubt anyone reading this probably is), but it was very strange. I commute an hour a day on the freeway and can't recall seeing a New Mexico plate in a long time. It's a small state, doesn't border California, I live in the sticks, and it's rare to see any non-California plate.

Anyway, I thought it was strange. Does anyone else have experiences like that?

Which, of course, doesn't mean that you haven't seen them, it's just that you weren't specifically looking for them and didn't attach significance to them if you did see them.

... I thought it was strange. Does anyone else have experiences like that?
When I bought my new car a year ago, I couldn't recall ever seeing one on the streets. Roughly a month after buying it, I was seeing them everywhere - same model, same colour... weirdness or priming (confirmation) bias? I vote the latter.

A university friend of mine (many years ago) started seeing messages in car registration plates. it was the prelude to a severe episode of bipolar schizophrenia (extreme highs, extreme lows, and hidden messages). He's been on medication ever since, and a promising life and career has been suppressed as a result. Reports of seeing significance or messages in registration plates have caught my attention ever since.

The whole thing falls apart when I try to take it seriously. I mean, what would I have to accept? Something like a dead person arranged for drivers from New Mexico to go and park in the parking lot? What are those people up to - did they feel a sudden urge to drive (however long the distance) to go see a movie (or shop or whatever)?

I'd rather believe in unusual coincidence than the mechanics needed to pull it off intentionally.

So the Good Lord Universal Spirit forces some poor slobs to drive all the way from New Mexico to give you a message via their licence plates? That does not seem like a very efficient way to run the Universe. :boggled:

Ah. I see marplots expressed the same thought while I was posting mine.

(Gord wanders off muttering about the curious ways of the Universal Spirit.)

I'm confused. In what way do those license plates help you? What are they a sign of? What advice can you derive from them?

Wouldn't a Ouija Board be a lot easier and less ambiguous?

Yes. Very frequently, I never notice license plates on cars. Then, for some reason, I'll start to notice them. And that's when I see all sorts of license plates.

Yes. A lot of them. But skeptics always say the only reason you notice these is because you are thinking of these things at the time. And also that odd coincidences actualy happen all the time. In fact, a member here had a sig quote regarding 1 in a million odds happening all the time. People who win lotteries have 1 in millions odds against them, yet they win. Someone ends up winning. Often it is not some Christian needy person either, where then you might think the Lord did it.
I once talked back to the radio, and the announcer immediately said ``that`s right Dave(my name)``. At least i thought he said that.
How about cleaning a vacant rental house that nobody left one thing behind. Often people leave suff in closets, cupboards, etc., then we have to call. This place had nothing. Nothing except a monopoly game house, that i found hiding under the pivot pin of a bifold closet door. The night before, i played Monopoly. The first time in about 20 years!
Another time i saw what appeared to be cirrus or contrail cliuds in the sky, straight in front of me over a highway, in the form of XII, on this otherwise cloudless day. Well, the night before, i was reading Bible verses soley in Daniel, chapter 12(XII).
And i have scores of other weird coincidences i have acually written in dozens of notebooks that seem beyond random chance. The odds are not 1 in a million, but i have had up to 4 odd ones in one day where say each would be like 1 in hundreds or a thousand. The fact i had 4 would sort of then multiply the odds, of having that many odd coincidences.
I have often mentioned old sayings i havent heard in years, only to turn on the radio, and the first thing that i tune in is an ad, and they say that expression! It`s the syncronicity of them that cause you to pause, and wonder what is going on.
Some of these one might attribute to a person with a caleidoscope mind, where in my case i am randomly thinking about many many things in a days time, increasing the odds something might coincide with one of your many thoughts.

I think it was Carl Sagan who once referred to us (as a species) as "Significance Junkies". What he meant was that we look for significance or meaning all the time, even when we have no reason to expect it. We want it. I suspect that to be the case here. Noticing New Mexico license plates is all that's happened. You haven't found a meaning, a message or any help of any kind but you are attempting to attach significance to noticing two New Mexico license plates a few hours after being told that your late mother-in-law uses them to communicate.

None of this means that you are foolish or gullible, it just means that you're human.

Me too! Lots of times! Here i thought i was the only one! Lol. I dont look at the clock for hours, look, and it is 11:11.
The odds increase say if you are wondering if its about lunchtime, so then you look. Your guessing say is accurate enough to be between 11 am and 1 pm. So the odds are 1 in 120, about. But i know for a FACT, absolutely, that i see this time more than once every once out of every 120 peeks! For sure! More often than 1 in 60. More like 1 in 10. Often, 1 in 1, for that time period during the day. Sometimes i have no reason to look at the clock. Its like i`m drawn to do so. And there it is; 11:11! The next time i might look is about 4 pm.
So what`s going on? The Lord playing games? Letting us know that we dont know everything? And that he is the guardian of secrets, and can throw us a little bone once in a while to keep us aware of the unexplained woo mystery world that he is in?

Yipes! I better schedule my appointment! Considering my dad was accused of being that by a nurse in the hospital, his uncle threw a cat threw the 2nd floor window when he was losing in a card game, and another uncle peeked thru window shades thinking the FBI was coming to his house, and another relative said ``good morning all the time``, no matter what time of day, and a female cousin got committed to the state insane assylum where she underwent an unsuccessful frontal lobotomy, and lived out her entire life there.
