Waxing nostalic about old PC games

Wow a few old games you have to pay for which are then legal and guaranteed to work whoo hoooo, gotta bookmark that one

Actually, I did bookmark it, and have paid a whole £3 or so for an old game. It works. I'm happy. Sure beats messing around with Dosbox for different settings to get things to work. My time is worth more than that.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Hunt The Wumpus in the text-based game category. subgenre: hide and seek. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wumpus

Anybody know where I can a program to play Doom II on winXP? no big installation, just open and play?

Star Control 1 and 2, Wing Commander 1 and 2, were my favorites. I also wasted a TON of time with Wolfenstein, Doom, Might and Magic 3, and most of the Space Quests.

Star Control 2 was the best, I highly recommend downloading the Ur-quan masters. http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

You are in a maze of twisty little passages.
Ahh, Hack. Those were the days. Actually, modern RPG's line WOW and Guild Wars are really just slightly sophisticated versions of Hack + nice graphics.

Hans

X-Com UFO Defense. Hans down the best and most atmospheric strategy game ever.
Police Quest, though I was too young to understand it when I played it and ended up just exploring and driving around. I don't think I spoke English either:).
TIE Fighter. Best space fighter sim I've ever played.
The Incredible Machine. Fantastic puzzle game.
Several of the SNES' games.

Also, one of my favorite SNES games I've played only a few times. Sea Quest DSV. Very obscure. We rented it once and I loved it, and I looked for it for so many years after that. Finally I've managed to find an emulator download:).

Dungeon Keeper 1/2:
Most fun RTS game ever.

Warlords 2 Deluxe:
"Greetings Warlord!". Loved this game. Loved how configurable it was. Spent many hours "hot seating" multiplayer games of this.

Any "Gold Box" D&D RPG:
Pool of Radiance taught me how to use a hex editor.

Montezuma's Revenge (the game, not the intestinal disorder):
Simple but addictive platformer.

Prince of Persia (the original):
Amazing game for it's time.

Bard's Tale 2:
Fun game, but with some deeply flawed riddles.

Ultima IV:
Lord British must die.

Leisure Suit Larry, I don’t think it has been mentioned yet.

For my final project in a FORTRAN class I wrote a text based submarine battle game. I spent 18 hours on our brand new IBM 5150 PC with a, if I recall correctly, Haystack modem typing the program into the college’s mainframe the day before it was due, I got a B.

did only read the first page here and saw people that had troubles running classic games on modern (fast) computers.

http://www.dosbox.com/

DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games...
Return to Castle Wolfenstein worked
Police Quest worked
larry 1,2 and 3 worked
even one game i found i played on my first PC a 8088.

what?
creating boot discs and all the troubles was the learning part for me. you cant leave that away :D

I had one of the first versions of Ultima on audio cassette for my brother's Apple I or II, can't remember.

ETA: I do remember it allowed me to fly the space shuttle and have some sort of adventure on a planet...somewhere.

You misunderstand me. I remember the 'thrill' of creating multiple boot disks for different games extremely well. But as educative as it was 15 years ago, I really don't want to repeat it.
