Van Der Sloot is a dead man.

Does this apply only to capital offenses or are other felonies included (i.e. rapists are raped, wife beaters are beaten)?

Does the state hire a torturer or does the family get to choose a torturer?

Do you have an opinion about why no country in the modern world does this?

Would you consider starting a new thread about this topic?

I've already stated my preference that the family get to do it (or not, as they choose.) As to (not you, but above), the innocence thing: I never want an innocent person found guilty and I would put in special penalties for anyone acting to cause a false belief of guilt (faking lab work, faking discovery of evidence, etc would be a capital crime if it caused a capital sentence and a crime regardless). Would need to be a few other additions to the law that would affect gangs/criminal syndicates and their activities especially in the area of witnesses and offenses against same. I am bored (a phrase I use to mean I have had it - for a long, long time) with handling real, violent, criminals as if they were human beings. I no longer even feel sympathy for their families IF they make any attempt to defend them/explain them/help them (if they don't, I feel sympathy for them as also victims of the criminal). My concern is all for the victims, I have none left for the others.

Two news stories both with video.

In the first video, an oil covered pelican is suffering and in danger of dying along the Louisiana Coast.

In the second video, a jailed Joran Van der Sloot is at risk of suffering and dying in a Peruvian jail.

I would like to say I am torn as to which one I am more concerned with but . . . pelicans win, hands down.

What was he thinking? Twice arrested in Aruba for murder...set free.

Alleged human trafficking? No charges. (maybe lies though)

Tried to extort the Holloway family? Another Aruban/FBI screw up.

He was thinking that he was bullet-proof.

He wasn't far off.

When he escaped jail about the fifth or sixth time in Aruba, America, Thailand and the Netherlands, over several different crimes, the world all thought "God, what does this man have to DO to get arrested?!?!? Really, what would he have to DO?! It's impossible for him to get arrested and stay arrested- despite all of his BEST efforts!"

I believe Iran gives families of murder victims the option of carrying out the execution of the perpetrator.

Personally, I'd like punishments to be almost clinical. As other posters have pointed out, isolation and incarceration is already almost unbearable to a human being.

The Netherlands (where I live) are waaaay too soft on crime IMHO. But I wouldn't want a return to the days of Balthasar Gerard.

Balthasar was overpunished. A long drop hanging was all that was necessary and civilized. When disposing of societys scum we have to be kinder to the perps than they were to their victims.

Theres a video circulating on the web that shows a convicted rapist in Guatamala being forced to wear womens clothes and do things I cannot describe on this forum. He is in for many years and while he is doing the unmentionable the guards laugh at him. I hope this will be Sloots fate.

Probably was a pedophile. If there's one thing prison's across the globe have in common, it's hating pedophiles. Rapists, not so much.

Rapists are pretty far down the ladder, depending on the details. The whole meme about child molesters being targeted on principle is a bit off as child molesters on the whole tend to not be career criminals, have zero street skills, and thus extremely vulnerable in prison.

A lot of this is just a screen of moral justification for vicious men to attack the weak.

Also, the kinds of human filth that are in prison equate pedophilia with homosexuality and homosexuals are frequent targets in prisons, so...

Oh, I think he might stay alive until his mother's money runs out. His end might not come so quickly or predictably. My guess is that he will become a tool for one cause or another.

Peru may not like the world attention they are in for, but they could embrace it as an opportunity. After all, they let a confessed murderer in, and they will not want to look sloppy and inept. A barbaric death, despite the satisfaction that might come - would make their justice system appear inept and incompetent.

Too bad the Boulder Colorado police dept. is not in charge of the investigation, or the Los Angeles District Attorneys' office is not prosecuting the case.

He may have had a chance!

When serial murderer Jeffrey Dahmer was beaten to death in prison, did people say that the Wisconsin criminal justice system was inept and incompetent?

IIRC, the apparatus for keeping him segregated and safe was there, but Dahmer refused to use it, choosing to take his chances with the main prison population. Hardly the system's fault.

OK, let's look at prisoners who want to use the segregated apparatus and cannot because there are not enough resources, if those prisoners are murdered, does that mean the system is inept and incompetent?

Theres a video of this happening to a rapist in a Guatamalan prison. I've never watched it but the man is verbally and sexually abused including being raped multiple times with laughing guards standing nearby watching.

I suppose the best that can be said is that: Justice and the Rule of Law will prevail. Interpret those as you will, I believe that Justice is an over-riding principle, a "god-like female, a goddess if you will" that will kick us when needed. Justice rules. The Law springs out of the bosom of Justice. OK, too much... Like Athena sprang from Zeus, right, whatever.

I would like to weigh in my 2 cents here on the whole him being raped and killed thing.

I do not condone a death penalty by the state because killing someone is wrong and the state will not be able to be punished for a murder. Making murder legal is nothing i would want.

But if this man is being beaten or raped by other inmates, punishment for this can be doled out. As a society we are not condoning it, but in the same sense the fear of it happening is still there.

Would i prefer if prison were a nice place ? Sure, it would help to rehabilitate people better and not turn people into hardened criminals as easily. But it is not, and never will be, sadly that is the way it works. Prison is a nasty place, and prisoners hate those who attack the innocent, this should be a deterrent , but it is not. If someone chooses to spit in the face of this fact and not only kill an innocent girl, but brag about it, well they made their own bed.

I disagree with that premise. There are some people who have had a "nice place" before they were incarcerated, and where did they end up? Sociopaths/psychopaths have no conscience or feeling for others. They could care less about having a "nice place." They are what they are.
