Moderated Using wrong pronouns= violence??

I'm confused. This isn't in the student handbook. It's not in any bylaws or anything. It's essentially a blog post for a student group that is trying to discuss misgendering people.

At worst, it seems a well-meaning person with no actual authority made a poor choice of words in a document of no consequence.

Is that the controversey?

apparently we should be worried that this blog post is the first step down a slippery slope leading to terrorism and fascism. and socialism somehow.

Its part of a much larger trend throughout the United States where words are meeting with severely undo consequences, prosecution and censorship. Our society seems to become more and more intolerant towards words, behavior and phenomenon that merely annoy and offend us.

Why point to this weak piss if there's a much larger trend?

This is in no way an answer to my question.

So you're saying this forum should only have conversations that are about "big fish", according to you?

Sorry, not going to play that game. This forum is big enough for big fish and "small fish", as you might see it.

the dangers of only reading headlines and not the body. no hint for you though.

That was a hint to help you figure it out. The body of the OP, which sets the topic of the thread, still doesn't support your claim.

No, I'm saying that this is weak piss. It doesn't even illustrate the "larger trend" you're talking about (there's no censorship involved here, and no attempt to punish hurtful speech), let alone provide evidence for it.

Talk about it all you want. But I'll point out that you did exactly the same thing this student or students did--you suggested there is such a thing as "violent speech", so don't expect me to take you seriously.

Because strong evidence is preferable to weak evidence (or non-evidence, in this case), of course.

Evidence, of what? That both the Left and Right are trying to punish and stifle speech they do not like?

Its all over the news. This may be a small fish but it still stinks.

Stop acting like being asked to be more respectful of others is the same as what happened to Emmitt Till.

Do people of all stripes overreact to stuff? Yes. But that has always been the case. Social media just makes it faster and bigger now. This is a country that would collectively lose its **** if a black guy used the wrong fountain. We're a county where one of its first laws passed by the Free Speach Loving Founding Fathers was the Sedition Act.

We're a country where people in government with actual power are attacking private citizens and calling them things like "pedophiles" for acknowledging transgender people exist and children might see one. But you're pretty goddamned quiet about that.

It seems that the problem isn't some new wave of censorship, but rather that straight white guys are being held accountable for once.

So you're saying because of our past transgressions, the thoughts expressed at UC Boulder are acceptable? Calling someone the "wrong" pronoun IS an act of violence and should be treated as such?

No, I'm saying the thoughts expressed by whatever student are acceptable o their own merits, one possibly poorly worded phrase aside. I'm also pointing out how silly all this pearl-clutching over "censorship" recently by the right is. Our historical relationship with Free Speach has been mythologized beyond parody.

Calling someone the "wrong" pronoun IS an act of violence and should be treated as such?

Why is wrong in quotes? Why are you claiming the post says something it doesn't?

Is asking someone to be more considerate now censorship?

The trend you're asserting exists.

This does not constitute evidence, and I'm going to point out that there might be a selection bias involved here.

And this isn't a fish at all.

If you want me to be more worried about censorship, I suggest finding examples of censorship.

So there are no examples of businesses and municipalities engaging in censorship and punishing speech, both with a Left and Right agenda?

Huh.

You have a bad habit of responding to figments of your imagination.

There are always examples of censorship. If you're asserting a trend, I'm assuming you're asserting something more than "censorship exists".
