U.S. allowed use of dogs with prisoners
Washington, DC, Jun. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. military authorized the use of unmuzzled dogs to intimidate prisoners in Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison, the Washington Post reported Friday.

A military intelligence interrogator also told investigators two dog handlers at Abu Ghraib were "having a contest" to see how many detainees they could make involuntarily urinate out of fear, according to the previously undisclosed statements obtained by the Post.

See, this is why you want Good People running your country, as opposed to Bad People. Bad People do Bad Things.

What I don't understand is how could he U.S. military simply "authorize" such a practice.

Wouldn't such a thing be already incompatible with existing american laws preventing torture against prisoners ?

The White House counsel to the President found what he believed was a loophole.

tamiO,
The White House counsel to the President found what he believed was a loophole.

And instead or reporting and filling the loophole, they took advantage of it to authorize torture !

It's reassuring to know that the most powerful army in the world is in the hands of such responsable people... :)

bignickel: Using dogs to interogate prisoners? That's INSANE! The best of them only have a 200 word vocabulary

Elio: And don't forget the language barrier. Maybe afghan hounds ?

tamiO:

Ok. But in fact, I don't find the whole thing funny at all ... :(

The torture that has been condoned by the U.S. Governemnt is despicable. It makes me ashamed of my leaders.

I am only consoled that it is coming out and maybe the people who are responsible will be impeached or at least voted out of office.

I realised my first reply to you may have seemed I supported the actions. I do not. I fully agree that when they found the loophole the respectable thing to do was close it not exploit it.

When Bush is finally called to account for this, he'll be tortured by a French Poodle. :D

Oops, still not funny. :(

Come on now! If something like that was about to happen they would call rename the breed to "Freedom Poodle", and that would be funny.

Ugh! No it would not.

I love dogs but I have been plenty scared by them too so I would not want to see anyone terrorized by them.

A legally astute joke from Jay Leno:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"According to the 'New York Times', last year white house lawyers concluded that President Bush could legally order interrogators to torture and even kill people in the interest of national security - so if that's legal, what the hell are we charging Saddam Hussein with?"

What are we charging Saddam with? Not being the President of the United States?

One of the best ever on JREF.

Perhaps ten more than their handlers, though?
