US Officials Declare Eastern Cougar Extinct

Well, if a cougar just killed a deer, the cougar is still around.

Good time for DNR to try to locate the cougar. Maybe dart it and DNA test it.

But, the next day would have been a good day to follow up with your own investigation of what you saw.

Try to locate the deer carcass as well.

Please show us where Jodie said the deer was killed. I thought she said it got away. If, a BIG if, she saw any such thing, I have to go with the suggestion of a de-clawed escapee.

The initial story said nothing about the deer getting away. I have already pointed this out with a link to Jodie's original post about the event.

Here it is again, nothing about the deer getting away and the chase continuing:

I watched a tan big cat chase a deer and bring it down, it looked like a cougar to me. One of my co-worker's brought a game cam pic of a cougar to work. They aren't extinct here despite what the official word is on their status.

Cougars will have spots up until they are about a year old, what Cliff is describing sounds like a young gray cougar to me. It might have looked black at night. I don't have any reason to think he would be lying or would have misidentified what he says he saw.

I can think of 8 cougar attacks - one of which was fatal - that were not listed that took place since 1980. All of these I have personal knowledge of due to my being involved in either the investigation of the attack (police respond far faster than Conservation officers in BC) - or the pursuit of the cougar after the attack.
I am sure there are dozens more that did not get tallied in those articles.

I have been trying to figure out how we can benefit from this contribution and decided this:

For events that actually happened, your position as investigator can walk us through how these events typically unfold. I imagine not only cougar attacks, but other comparable events. One would think bears or moose in your location.

The department is going to have ongoing priorities, might be a murder investigation one day and nothing but traffic tickets another day I don't know - but dangerous animals running around neighborhoods killing other full grown animals has to rank as something pretty significant.

The State Troopers will come straight away and kill a grizzly raiding properties here. Most of the people around here don't want to call them though because they want to take the grizzly out themselves.

I've shot them right in the front doorway, trying to get in. A black bear. He got his wish. His hide is inside, anyway. I can post a picture of it.

Sorry guys, the storm knocked my power and internet out. It's only sporadically back on now and I am sheltering at home. The city is on curfew. I can't drink any water until they make sure the city supply is uncontaminated. So I'll be here hit or miss for the next few days until the damage from the storm is assessed and repairs are made. I've never seen anything like this in Columbia before. Thank God I'm up on a bluff and on the Broad river. My neighbors to the south weren't so lucky, their homes were flooded and that side of town was evacuated. It's been horrible here the last 3 days.

I spoke with Wanda before the storm hit. She said she called the sighting in but didn't know if a report was filed. At that point, I called, left a message, and e-mailed DNR to see if they had any written reports of cougar sightings in the last two years out in the Edisto area. I haven't heard back from them since the storm hit the next day so I doubt anyone has been back in the office. I'll try back later when things settle down here.

The Cougar has probably left Edisto due to the flooding, and is now residing more towards Statesboro.

That was some kind of flooding.

I expected you to report back that you were building an ark. :)

Stay safe. If there are any cougars, they are on high ground too! :D

*sniff* nobody cared when our power, phone and internet were out last week. Nor when we were evacuated from an 83,000 acre fire last year.

On the other hand we weren't whining about how horrible it was to divert attention from a lack of evidence. We got at least six months of food, unlimited water, three generators, maybe 400 gallons of fuel on hand...and an outhouse. If your city sewage is out - you have a poop problem, lol.

I told a lot of monster stories each night, because we had four candles going in different parts of the cabin and that gave a great spooky atmosphere. They know the stories are ********, we tell them before, during, and after - but it's still duper's delight getting them all worked up. lol.

Sure, there are no monsters. But that's who they come after - the people that don't believe. And it hurts all the more when a monster that doesn't exist is chewing your leg off. They memorize all the canards - wooden stake in the heart of vampires, check. Silver bullet for werewolves, check. Keep a cross by the bed, check. Holy water, check.

We're Alternate Reality gaming them, then fessing up, then going right back to gaming... you don't perpetuate a myth and act in antisocially abusive ways to keep the game going.

Maybe you could help improve the wikipedia article.

Ok, I got some power and no where to go for the moment. When I said it took the deer down, it did, but it lost it's grip, and continued the chase. I saw it grab it from behind knock it off it's feet and roll with the momentum before both jumped up and continued running.

The co-worker in Chester County never followed through with sending me the game cam pic that I asked for 4 years ago because I intended to post it on the BFF. I wouldn't know how to get in touch with her now since she left the agency 2 years ago, sorry.

It will be a long while before I hear back from DNR but I'll try back when I think things have settled down enough on the coast that I won't feel bad for taking up their time. And yes, if cougars were ever here they surely aren't now. While I'm asking again I'll see if they ran across any dead bigfoot, lizard men, or pterodactyls, all cryptids that have been seen in SC. That last part is a joke in case you missed my attempt at levity.

John Jones- If you don't like what I say there is no need to follow me around from thread to thread to let me know, I got it. Same to you ABP, although I don't consider you to be stalking me on the forum since we both frequent the same threads.

Amazing how the details improve as the tale is told and retold.:D

here:

Mark Twain said:
When I was younger I could remember anything, whether it happened or not; but my faculties are decaying, now, & soon I shall be so I cannot remember any but the latter. It is sad to go to pieces like this, but we all have to do it.
