Understanding the Conservative Mindset

the legal consequences were partisan by a guy trying to please his blue district
Bragg mentioned his willingness to hold Trump accountable throughout his 2019 campaign for office, so he's not exactly a non-political example as far as that goes. The attempt to separate legal and political consequences doesn't make much sense in the Clinton example, either, at least not to me. I doubt he'd've lost his law license without political pressure, even though perjury is pretty on the nose for bad laywering.

i don't think he's a non political example. but he's not a conservative, so not sure what his behavior or motivation has to do with anything. conservative pressure was definitely on clinton, but not because they care about sexual misconduct

Maybe, but I said exactly what I'd consider good evidence for the proposition under consideration, and you already quoted me saying it at #259.

kind of a silly demand to make tho

If we're trying to grok the conservative mindset, it makes much more sense to go off opinion polls of randomly selected people than go off election results, which consist of a self-selected biased sample operating under varying conditions (e.g. Clinton was accused of indecent exposure, Trump was accused of other sex crimes).

i presented a poll in 225 and it was your comments on it that started this whole exchange. it wasn’t the specific polling you requested but it’s also not going off election results.

you should probably reread the last few pages.

and really, other sex crimes is carrying a lot of weight. i couldn’t in good conscience compare indecent exposure to an international sex trafficking ring. of course again, so not to be accused of bias, will say that clinton seems to have partaken a bit on a certain plane himself, but that was years after his presidency, not widely published for years before during and after and again during.

Okay, let's talk about that poll in particular, rather than trying to understand the conservative mindset.

"Two-thirds of self-identified MAGA Trump voters say they would continue supporting a GOP candidate accused of sexual assault."

These are people who already voted for "a GOP candidate accused of sexual assault," and they are being asked whether they are the sort of folks who would do something that they've already done. 🤷‍♂️

Why is the result not 100%? Presumably the remaining one third of "MAGA Trump voters" forgot about Jean Carroll, or just don't have a broad enough news diet to have ever learned about her accusation.

you basically said i was going off election results and should be looking at opinion polls, which was incorrect and i pointed to the poll i presented. now you’re butt hurt at having to look at a poll like it’s a waste od time and off topic. i don’t really care if you discuss the poll or not tbh particularly since the take that followed was pretty useless

if you don’t think opinion polls conducted on conservatives have any relationship to the conservative mindset, stop asking for them.

If you really believe conservatism literally means voting for Trump, then I'm not sure how to proceed.

i don't think you looked at the poll, even though you said you would. so idk what the attitude was about lol

that's not what i think, but conservatives did vote for trump and he enjoyed overwhelming support. conservative media turned into propaganda outlets for him and conservative politicians bow at his feet because if he primaried them, the voters would pick the maga candidate. you want to act like conservativism has nothing to do with maga, but you can't back that up. so you just don't want to talk about it.

The thing I have noted about conservatives is they always end up accepting progressive ideas, it just takes them longer.

Here is the original poll: https://www.politico.com/news/2026/07/30/maga-trump-scandal-2026-elections-01013859

It contains the startling insight that "MAGA Trump voters say they would stick with a GOP candidate accused of domestic violence" which we probably could've safely assumed given that Trump reportedly was that candidate.

It does not contain any mentions of conservatism, the mindset associated with conservatism, nor the principles traditionally associated with conservatism.

A major problem is that all it takes for them to reject their own acceptance of those ideas is somebody, anybody, telling them that their bigotry was the way to go because that was always what they wanted to believe.

This explains the tax cuts and recent significant reduction in the federal workforce. It explains why Mississippi schools outperform California.

Congressman Cory Mills, who'd been accused of domestic violence, just lost the Republican primary by a large margin.

It would be a mistake to generalize from this, just as it would be a mistake to generalize from the 2024 election of someone accused of domestic violence by his first wife.

Sure, but it's a real-world contrafactual to the abstraction that's being promoted.
