Well I think I'm uniquely well qualified.

I have no experience of government, I'm not a politician and I'm not even a member of the party in question. It worked for Donald J Trump so it stands to reason that another "The Don" should rise to power on this side of the Atlantic :D.

In addition to what others said, I don't see how that would work the same way.

The Tories and the DUP are not direct competitors; the Tories only stand in Britain, the DUP only in NI. NI has its own laws, so the Tories can simply throw them bones like no gay marriage, no abortion, etc. etc., in NI in this legislature period, plus a couple of hundred millions extra for NI.

In Dublin we had to go through passport control, even though we did not have to go through passport control between France and Switzerland.

But when we flew out again from Dublin there were no passport controls at Bristol Airport.

But with flying you always have passport controls. When I fly from Amsterdam to Rome - within the Schengen Area - I also have passport control. However, when I get in my car and drive to Rome, or to Cadiz, or to Budapest, I have no passport controls whatsoever.

Right now, Ireland is not part of Schengen because it has the CTA, a similar agreement with the UK. After Brexit, that reason is gone and the inner-Irish border is the outer border of the EU. The default would be that it becomes a similar border as between, say, Poland and Belarus.

A second option would be that Ireland-the-island would become part of Schengen. But the DUP said they don't want a special EU status for NI, so they shot that down.

A third option would be that the Irish Republic doesn't join Schengen, but it's EU policy that everybody joins in due time, and most EU states are, I think, very happy to be rid of the most meddlesome "I want an exception" member.

You've said many times in these threads that Brexit is the death knell to your company, so it's time to look for another career. What's stopping you? :D

Why that?

Cameron took the gamble with the Brexit referendum and lost.
May took the gamble with these elections and lost.
Either Davis or Johnson will take the gamble of going into Brexit negotiations fully unprepared and without any knowledge. I think that makes them uniquely qualified, based on precedent. :)

But what do you think did May in in these elections?
Was it her "dementia tax" proposal?
Was it her aloofness and staying away from debates?
Was it the realization of youngsters they dropped the ball on staying away with the Brexit referendum and now compensating for it?

Watched the election coverage on BBC America.
From what I gather from the political reporters, the only thing that saved May was that the Tory Party Tribal Elders thought it would be a bad move to remove her with only a week to go before the Britex negotiations start, and her poltical future is still very much in doubt. The term "Caretaker GOvernment" was being used a lot.
Two times in a row the Tories made a huge political gamble and lost;hate to think how the Tory leaders would do if they vacation in Las Vegas....

But the UK government has to be able to impartially negotiate with NI MPs to keep power sharing going. Hard to be impartial when your very government relies on one of the parties in the discussions.

Was it the forced fair and balanced broadcast media that let people see Corbyn wasn't the bogeyman that the likes of the Mail portrayed him to be?

I think the last few TV appearances and debates were a shock for a lot of people who expected a bogeyman but saw someone saying things that were fairly reasonable. While at the same time May seemed to be cracking up.

I also think that Corbyn finally realized that a lot of the stuff he could get away with as a backbencher he could not get away with as party leader.

He has seemed to grow into the job a bit. He seems more relaxed and confident and a bit more polished as time went on.
 
Another area that the Tories shot themselves in the foot was the security issue. Proposing huge cuts to the Police budget while saying you will make Britian safer was really, really, stupid, and Labor was not slow to take advantage of it.
