UFO Spotted in China! Airport Shut Down!

I love it :)

Let's ignore the most interesting parts of this story. An airport shut down. Confirmed radar contact. Gov't acknowledgment that something was there.

Let's instead overanalyze some poor photos, and 'debunk' the evidence that has the least to do with the overall story.

No, I don't think its aliens. I'm quite sure there's a rational explanation for it. But an airport wasn't shut down over an airliner; reflections in glass didn't create a radar image; and the gov't didn't acknowledge the event in the national media over someone's hallucinations.

Most likely a result of either an accident, or a test, related to some sort of military research or activity.

I can see your point.

I hope you can see mines', which are nothing but pointing out that there are perfectly reasonable explanations fo the images and that the images may or may not be of the actual "UFO".

To me the video (assuming the video shows the actual UFO) shows what looks like a rocket booster of some kind going into orbit or already in orbit. These kinds of things happened before. My guess is that it is of Russian origin but that is just a guess. Officials associated with the airport probably overreacted.

This looks worth following, but I don't expect to hear too much more about it. Still haven't heard from China about the UFOs they videotaped during the solar eclipse last year, have we? IIRC they promised a report to the international community...what's the frickin' holdup?

Because that was a misquote from the observatory. The observatory reported seeing unidentified bright areas of the corona before totality, which was unusual. They never reported seeing a UFO and the director of the observatory was surprised when he was told that his observatory supposedly saw one.

Additionally, according to James Oberg, the video being shown in the current clip of the airport shutdown showing the "comet-like" object is a clip taken of the progress launch and not the UFO being reported (my guess is the station is discussing how rocket launches can produce UFO reports). Details are important but Jim is suggesting it might be Venus that started all of this. I would like to see some actual reports for direction. Of course, Venus is always a canidate. I recall Allan Hendry quoting one Air traffic controller as stating that they have tried to contact venus several times trying to get it to land (thinking it was an approaching plane). So, it is not unheard of an ATC getting excited about Venus.

This is James Oberg's comments in a recent e-mail:

A number of random images have been released on Chinese TV and in
newspapers -- the comet-like visual is actually from Urumqi a week ago
when observers there (and throughout central Asia, including Bishkek)
got a magnificent backlit post-sunset view of the Russian 'Progress'
space freighter launch to the ISS.

video (2 min 35 sec) note dramatic shape change at 0:30 !!!

This linked photo is a time exposure of a cruising helicopter, probably of no relation to the
actual event. The aircrew visual sighting was reported as the airliner approached
the airfield, and heavens-above shows that a landing from the east (the flight
came from the southeast) would place Venus directly above the Western horizon
right in front of them. Garbled accounts of a radar blip could easily be just garbled

I would like to see the actual reports with times and direction. However, Venus seems to be a valid canidate at this point.

Thanks. From your link:

“That’s false news. I said ‘an unidentified object’ not ‘an unidentified flying object,’” he said.

Ooh well, that changes everything! Now people can't mock him for being a UFO woo. Apparently believing in UOs is ok, so his scientific reputation, and hence his career, is safe now.

So the next time you guys feel like making fun of Ji, just remember "that what he saw was an unidentified object, but ‘not a UFO’."

"The British newspaper quoted Ji as having said: “During the July 22 total solar eclipse observation, China had discovered near the sun an unidentified object, it’s physical nature remains to be further studied.”"

So give us what you got so far, China! Maybe the international community can help. What's the frickin' holdup? Are airport delays slowing down your analysis? Ha!

You need to look further into the text. He was referring to something to do with the Corona. If you are looking for images of this "UO", you are going to be disappointed because it is probably a bright region in the Corona and nothng more.

No I gathered that. It was an 'unidentified flying object' near the sun, as opposed to a "typical" unidentified flying object moving through the atmosphere. That's lucky for him, because he can use that irrelevant distinction to avoid the stigma of being associated with UFOs. Maybe he is a coward for trying to avoid the stigma...for choosing status over taking a stand for whats right. Or maybe I am too harsh. Just sayin'. Status-seekers don't make good truth-seekers.

From your link:

"But Ji has scotched that report by saying that he does not know why his explanation about a bright spot close to the sun, very likely to be the result of some coronal activity filmed during the total eclipse, was misunderstood."

Has it occurred to you that the Chinese might be trying to blow smoke up your ass? I just want transparency and cooperation. I want to know. I am not pinning all my woo-woo hopes and dreams on the outcome of this. I already 'believe' in 'unidentified objects'. The ones I have seen just so happen to have been flying at the time. ;)

Why do you imply he is trying to "avoid stigma"? Can you read his mind? If it was something astronomical and they photographed it, it will be presented in a scientific paper, which takes time to put together and publish. That is where the "real truth" is revealed and not some UFO blog/headline grabbing website. If it were truly some sort of spaceship/UFO (which is what all the UFO blogs/groups were hyping at the time), then it would have been presented right away since there is no need for it to be presented in an astronomical journal. There is nothing to study and it would be a feather in the observatory's cap for producing the first genuine image of an alien spaceship. However, his statement was they saw something unidentified that was probably associated with the corona. That puts everything in a completely different light.

It is the misrepresentation of what was said (and probably butchered in translation) by various UFO groups/organizations/individuals that is the issue here. Apparently, you seemed to have believed it was a "real UFO" as well judging by your original post. Is it your opinion that the observatory is trying to hide proof of "UFOs"?

Has it occurred to you that maybe all they saw was a bright area of the corona? After all, that was what they were doing during an eclipse. They weren't looking for UFOs but scientific data associated with the corona!

You apparently can't handle transparency and cooperation. The problem being that you seem to think people are hding things when, in reality, they are telling the truth and cooperating. You just don't like the answers because they collide with your preconceived ideas.

Um, because that's what I think he is doing.

Can you read his mind?

No. At least, I don't think so. :p

I hope that is the case.

It's a possibility. There are lots of possibilities and I'm not going around ruling any of them out.

Yes it has. And if that turns out to be the case, I am not going to give up my 'belief' in UFOs. However I will give up any hope I might have had that this particular case is a UFO.

After all, that was what they were doing during an eclipse. They weren't looking for UFOs but scientific data associated with the corona!

Yes. Serendipity. That's why I hope it turns out to be a UFO. Skeptics won't be able to easily accuse them of fraud or hoax, because they weren't there for UFOs, so what motive could they have to fake anything? Still, I must not underestimate skeptics ability to twist things around. Skeptics will find a way to remain skeptics until millions of UFOs land on the White House lawn or something over-the-top like that happens.

You apparently can't handle transparency and cooperation.

Oh no! Now we 'apparently' start with the personal remarks eh? So I guess it's my turn to make a personal remark about you? Or do I have to skip my turns since this is a 'skeptic' forum and I'm just a dumb woo-woo?

The problem being that you seem to think people are hding things when, in reality, they are telling the truth and cooperating.

Prove it.

If the UFO phenomenon is legitimate (it is), then governments know that and are withholding that. Why would they do that, you ask? Perhaps they worry about social destabilization.

You just don't like the answers because they collide with your preconceived ideas.

No, they collide with my direct empirical observations. Several of them.

You are going to have offer up some evidence in addition to your "empirical observations". And lots of it.

Please don't ask for that. :( The next thing you know Rocket Robin Hood Roger Ramjet will show up and we'll have 50 pages of misidentified blimps.
