Merged Two Mosques to be built near Ground Zero

Wow, Elind. Are you a descendant of McCarthy? You seem to invoke the same, paranoid arguments of those witch hunts.

Bigotry is sad, yes. The "gut reaction" comes from religious/racial stereotyping, I don't see why I should feel sorry for someone or appease them because their "gut" is religiously intolerant..

That is true, but the way most people with vision would address that very real issue is not to take actions to, predictably, inflame the current situation while claiming the action is intended to defuse it when any fool could see it would not.

I have to give Elind some credit though.. While his claims that the funding is all from anti-American foreign interests seem to be CT at the moment this is about as close as JREF has gotten to a non-bigoted objection to the mosque.

Why this mosque in particular is any worse than the evil foreign conspiracy putting a different mosque in Tampa or something isn't clear to me.. Also I'd like to know if the problem is with a specific set of foreigners or if the entire policy of letting foreign nationals own property and erect structures in the U.S. should be abandoned? If the former, then what other buildings are linked to this shadowy group of overseas financiers?

C'mon you can make this not racist if you try hard enough, even if you wind up in the CT forum it's oddly a step in the right direction.

(Edit: Good news, Nancy Pelosi is on the same page, maybe you two can combine your efforts?)

Has it been pointed out that the man reponsible for proposing the building is a former Bush appointee and representative of the USA to Islamic countries?

I don't care where it gets built, but this community center/mosque needs to be built near GZ.

What will it say to the world? It will say that we are BETTER than the terrorists and extremists who hate us.

What will it say if we do NOT build this thing? That we coddle and appease the extremists and bigots amoung our own society. And it will confirm what the terrorists say about the USA, that we are at war with Islam.

Name any other identifiable group/religion/sect who committed this crime in their name, and many others, and the gut reaction would be exactly the same. Islam is conflated with 911 and much more. Just because you think that is sad, and I do too, doesn't make it go away.

Islam did not commit 9/11. The terrorist organization al Qaeda makes up less than %99.9999 of the world's population of Muslims. Surely you can see the error here. Conflating the world's Christian population with the Phelps clan and those like them would equally be in error.

As I said earlier, I would love to see something done by American Muslims for Muslims. I want the Saudis and other governments who, whether by proxies or not, build "churches" in other countries, to stay at home.

Good, since that's not the case here then there's no problem.

First, we don't know who is "paying for" it, and whether you like it or not two thirds of all New Yorkers who don't like it are not extremist bigots.

Your terminology is that that of an extremist of another sort.

many Christian leaders happily supported Hitler and urged their followers to do the same.

I guess all churches should be banned from Israel?

Great. Can you then answer the question, please, since you know the answer?

Sure: there's no church being built there, just like there's no mosque being built there. There is a basketball court and a culinary school that will be in the building, though.

It doesn't matter who is paying for it. As long as they are not breaking laws, it's irrelevant.

And yes, all of those opposed to this are bigots, as they've yet to provide one rational reason, only stereotypes and paranioa.

Tangents. Tangents. (not to mention Godwin).

Who said anything about banning? I just being critical. Got a banana in your ear?

He's not Godwinning the thread, you asked him to name one other group and he did. You got a scew loose?

Really. Oh well then, that explains everything and all this is just silliness about a 13 story building. Thanks for clearing that up.

Time for me to retire. Goodnight.

yes, how dare I label people who express bigotry....as bigots.

how dare I label folks who express extremism...as extremists.

how intolerant of me.

There will also be a small memorial to those who lost family and friends on 9/11 in the building. I also heard there might possibly be a daycare center as well.
