For some reason I have always thought the leaders of this church were leftists who wanted to give conservative religious groups a bad name.

I am a bit surprised at this position. I do not think WBC gives conservative religious groups a bad name because WBC is not anything like a conservative religious group. WBC is simply one man's need for attention and for lawsuit money being magnified by his extended family. If anything, it gives crazy people a bad name.
