• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Twitter has started blocking unregistered users

At least one person has observed that Twitter's implementation of the block to non-logged-in views neglected to account for the fact that its own web app will continuously ping Twitter's servers until it retrieves content to populate the page with. Since that is now "never" thanks to the block, Twitter is effectively DDOSing itself because every time someone loads the home page without being logged in the web app begins spamming ten server requests per second in an endless loop.
Billions of facepalms per second...

This is amazing.

I've never had a twitter account but over the last year I've followed lots of links to tweets posted here and elsewhere regarding the war in Ukraine. Now if I click on a link I get an error message and twitter launches a DDOS attack on itself.

We are in the presence of genius.

Countdown to “Killing Twitter was his intention all along” by those paying for verification.

Prediction: the website crashes for good and blue checks cannot even use the interface to cancel their subscription. Becomes the subject of a class action lawsuit.

There are several folks noting that this is caused by Twitter not paying for Google cloud and being unable to transfer to another system in time.

Elon is such a pathetic joke.

And Trump will post (on his own little platform) "See? I tolld ya!"

Apparently Twitter has applied temporary daily reading limits to address "extreme levels" of data scraping and system manipulation, Elon Musk has said.

In a tweet, Musk said verified accounts have been temporarily limited to reading 6,000 posts a day.
Unverified accounts (the huge majority) to 600 posts.

Interesting. It shouldn’t be Musk making this announcement, it should be Linda Yaccarino.

This is going to kill Twitter.

The hubris on this thread is next level.
His Tesla Stock value has doubled in the last few weeks. He has captured the minds and believers in freedom of expression in the colonies, he has replatformed enfants terrible like Peterson, JK Rowling and so on.
I have learned plenty from Twitter in 24 hours with no barrier, I must be in a discredited parallel universe.

What hubris? I don't see any hubris?

His Tesla Stock value has doubled in the last few weeks.
This is about Twitter.

He has captured the minds and believers in freedom of expression in the colonies, he has replatformed enfants terrible like Peterson, JK Rowling and so on.
He has also deplatformed plenty of people. Remember the tweet about cis- being hate speech? Also, pretty much everybody who refuses to pay him has been semi-deplatformed.

I have learned plenty from Twitter in 24 hours with no barrier, I must be in a discredited parallel universe.

Well good for you. Have you got the new blue "I'm a Musk shill" checkmark?

He's turned Twitter from an imperfect but useful and successful social media platform into a train wreck. He's saddled the company with $13 billion of debt and, by his actions, is driving its customers away.

He doesn't know you exist and he's not going to give you a pony.

I'm sure the advertisers are going to be thrilled that user engagement is being so heavily restricted.

Indeed. When I was in junior school, somehow the question of how free newspapers made their money, and the teacher explained about the selling of advertising. I seem to recall most of us understood that.

So it seems that Musk has less understanding of Twitter's income than 8 year old me would have done.

This is amazing.

It's certainly... Something

As I say, parallel universe.
I learn from current Twitter with no fanatical devotion.

On the subject of cis, I would let it roll like an avalanche while understanding his knee jerk to ban it.
He is human, and that is seldom perfect.
Remind me where presidents and ex presidents get to speak to the plebiscite on a daily basis. These glitches are perfectly human matters, not organised by a deity.

I lasted about 20 minutes of scrolling through my feed and looking at my notifications before I hit the limit

Musk showing sympathy for his users by tweeting
Oh the irony of hitting view limits due to complaining about view limits

you awake from a deep trance,
step away from the phone
to see your friends & family

20 minutes is $us 2075/3 for a tax lawyer.
Expensive scrolling lol.
I admire Musk for capturing the glitterati, the common man.
