Tsunami expected in Hawaii at 11am local today

I know someone who lives right next to the Hawaii Tsunami Warning Center. Guess they will be the first to know! They are already packing and planning.

If Hokulele is on-island, I imagine she'd be smart enough to get home from her early-morning surf session before the tsunami hits. I can assure you that her home is well out of any sort of danger zone.

In fact, if any forum members from the low-lying areas want to take refuge at higher ground, my home would be open as well.

Hokulele will likely be busy imaging and mapping the impact of the tsunami. I wouldn't be surprised if she's already at an emergency response center right now, cooking up scenario maps for evacuation planners and first responders.

Or out on her surfboard waiting for the Big One. One or the other.

Respectfully,
Myriad

They've just updated the ETA, to 11:26 am for our island.

We were scheduled to attend an event in the evacuation zone of our island beginning at noon. We may be late.

Last time there was a tsunami "watch", I wasn't aware of it, and actually went to the beach that day! (In defense of my own stupidity, the civil defense sirens hadn't gone off.)

This is a rather amazing example of the New News:

Instant, impromptu websites with direct feeds, and twitter.

I'm worried about tourists. They want them to simply go up to higher floors in the hotels they're at. The correct solution is to go inland to higher ground to avoid the water.

It's being called a vertical evacuation. Go up - more than three floors. They don't want huge numbers moving inland because it can clog roadways. I gotta believe in these times the authorities know what they are talking about. General tsunami preparedness and procedure has never been better (at least for Hawaii).

Holulele reported in on the other thread, she is in the High Sierras (California) today. This thread should be merged with the other.

Several other members in Hawaii have checked in there as well. There are parties breaking out on the high areas above the beaches.

Our member in Santiago reports being shaken up, no caualties.
