Tsunami expected in Hawaii at 11am local today

I'm having a great deal of trouble convincing myself that a three-foot wave is worth all the anxiety.

Yes, he did say that more than once. A Googling shows it's been done before. It's like a viral meme now. Like "Kilroy was here".

ETA: Something to do with Captain Janks... whatever that is.

If Hokulele is on-island, I imagine she'd be smart enough to get home from her early-morning surf session before the tsunami hits. I can assure you that her home is well out of any sort of danger zone.

In fact, if any forum members from the low-lying areas want to take refuge at higher ground, my home would be open as well.

Please stay safe, Ladies. Don't make me come up there.

The tsunamis at sea are only inches/feet high. It's the shape of the bay plus shallow depth that makes them rise up. Isn't Hilo an east facing bay that was hit umm in the 70s? Proven bad site.

Unless Hokolele is a quadriplegic who was stranded on the beach, she probably survived the great Hawaii tsunami of 2010.

Luckily, The Mouse That Roared, tsunami wise, which probably says the 8.8 did not involve significant under-deep-water displacement. Abruptly moving a few thousand feet of water column several feet vertically and over a fair sized lateral extent is needed to generate major tsunamis.

It was supposed to pass by my part of Vancouver Island twenty minutes ago. We didn't notice anything.

Yeah, and that's just the problem. The next one that happens will get nearly no coverage, and the fools will wander out to see it, and the police will be lax about keeping security up. This one was a media event, the next will be a non-event, until after it happens, just like AlBell pronounces it here.

People can be so dumb sometimes.

For reasons I am unable to discern, Central Victoria has been left off the warning list.

I intend to protest this glaring omission.

I suppose they'll trot out the tired old 1000-feet-high-and-100-miles-from-the-coast excuse that they used last time I complained about them not publishing local tide charts, but it's the squeaky wheel that gets the oil, as they say.

We're nearing the all-clear with no harm to Hawaii. Thanks to everyone who kept this thread a science thread. You all did good.

Well it was interesting watching the one reef (or rocks?) repeatedly exposed and covered, but fortunately for anyone with coastal property or other interest in the HI coast, nothing more than that happened. Darn live cams were all bandwidth challenged but I managed to find an online live news stream which had a couple live cam views. CNN broadcast the same feed much of the time but the live Net stream was a tad more consistent staying on the action shot. ;)
