I don't know about forcing sanctions or anything, but I can absolutely confirm that the air quality up here sucks. I'm in Grand Forks (~80 miles from the Canada border and sharing a border with Minnesota) and it sucks up here. It almost looks like a dense fog outside but I don't know that Canada is doing it on purpose. I doubt they enjoy having their country on fire and God knows the US starts itself on fire for ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ gender reveal parties so we don't have much room to gripe.

Can confirm. The smoke sucks and we are not enjoying the campfire.

I had to laugh at the one politician who tweeted something to the effect of 'put out the fires or we'll come put them out for you Canada!!!" Oh really? You will? Please go right ahead! Its like they're so stuck in this reflexive aggressive posture that the only way they can offer support is to phrase it as a threat.

That being said, there are a number of states and agencies that are sending actual help and there is a good deal of cooperation going on. Its sorely needed and we're thankful for it. I don't want to let these grandstanding buffoons distract from the real work that is going on.

This is just a publicity stunt for a group of Michigan lawmakers, all Republican. They've bitched about this exact thing for the last two years, and are repeating it again this year. Both times they have completely ignored the primary reason behind the fires: global climate change.

In addition, the fires are burning in Canada's vast boreal forest, which is quite different from the eastern deciduous forest in Michigan. The boreal forest evolved around the occasional wildfire as a means of rejuvenation, meaning when they start to burn, they really burn!

When these complaints were raised last year, Jed Kaplan, a University of Calgary professor who specializes in climate
change, wildfires and air quality, responded:

Perhaps it's time for the Canadian government to invite the Michigan lawmakers on a little tour of Canada's north. See how they feel after flying for six or seven or eight hours in a little propeller plane over vast areas of boreal forest, and then they might finally start to understand the scale of the problem.

To get an idea of the scale, if you overlaid Canada's boreal forest on the continental USA, it would cover almost 40% of the country. Or take all the US east of the Mississippi River, discount the Great Lakes, snip out New York and the New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont), and the remainder is covered edge to edge in one vast unbroken forest, pretty much as below:

And the thing that stops fast jet pilots from doing stupid dangerous stunts is their training and regulations with consequences. Because someone who is naturally risk averse is unlikely to try to become a fighter pilot.
