It took me a moment too, since they had to make it visible and ridiculous, so they left out the third participant, made the man's medal enormous, and dressed them for the street.

Personally, I don't think that I had much trouble figuring out the main part of was going on there, though the empty spot bit has gone over my head. On the other hand, that first set? Especially the boot stomping on the flag picture? The first thing that I remembered when I saw that was beach towels with flag patterns on them and a certain right wing woman who was trying to show off how patriotic she was for having got that pattern... as she used it as a beach towel at the beach and walked all over it. A bit beyond that, the right wing's gone all in on cheapening the flag by embracing its use for commercial purposes and altering it rather freely as they push various agendas that tend to be distinctly harmful to the country with their alterations.
