ICE shoots and kills a man in Houston.

July 7: A federal immigration agent fatally shot a driver in Houston , the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) has said. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo Houston that his father had been out that morning looking for workers in the area. According to ICE, Salgado Araujo “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer”. The confrontation resulted in “our officer firing his weapon in self-defense”. ICE did not provide any evidence corroborating its account, which echoes descriptions of other ICE shootings. The Texas Civil Rights Project condemned ICE’s use of force and raised questions about the agency’s statement on the shooting.

The justice department confirmed letters went out to all 50 states and the District of Columbia, “asking for voluntary compliance in a timely manner with their obligations under federal law to ensure only citizens vote in federal elections”. Threatening criminal charges escalates a longstanding back and forth between the federal government and the states over voter data. The federal government has previously sought access to state voter rolls, which contain the personal data of millions of Americans.
