Doesn't read like a letter from a sitting US President. Certainly seems too long-winded for Ike...

So, having done a shallow dive on the subject, it appears Ike did have a picture of Lee in his office, along with other "influential" Americans from history. There was a story about Ike in the New York Times in 1957 (not 1961). He said the reason was not for praise but to remind him of how influence works. Ike's view on Lee was that he had backed the wrong cause and made military mistakes worthy of dismissal. He certainly did not endorse the Confederate cause.

I was mildly surprised (given who was sharing it) to find that the letter does appear to be genuine.

True, but they might stay at home. For some reason it's a big leap to actively vote against one's habitual party.

I know one Trump voter who is doing something similar. He could never vote for a Democrat, no way, but he wants to stay home or vote for third party candidate even if that candidate has no chance of getting elected.

I guess it's better than nothing.

That is what I don't get about this attitude: he believes firmly that Trump needs to be stopped, and he knows that his voting will not bring in whoever he votes for, but he takes the risk that Trump stays in power in order to … well what? I don't understand it.

Just because I think that it'll resonate a bit with many here largely as a result of Trump and his maladministration...

There’s a grief I don’t see named anywhere. It belongs specifically to people who are older, who have fought long and hard, who still care deeply — and who are now watching the possibility of a better future slip away at the exact moment their own capacity is slowing down. And not just a better future for themselves, but for the younger generations they love so dearly. Mad and sad at the same time. Carrying decades of investment in institutions and movements and people, and watching all of it under threat and being torn down.

ETA: I know that it resonated a bit with me, even with me being far from retirement.
