Trump's Second Term

The next time Democrats try to tell you the price of gas is President Trump’s fault, remember Joe Biden’s Energy Sec. Jennifer Granholm saying, “The president does not control the price of gasoline.” Hypocrisy

Ah, right. Just because, there are two things that I don't think that others quite brought up in response to this.

First is perhaps most relevant to this post -

There's a difference between 'control' and 'effect'.

Republicans did try to make the case that Biden's actions affected prices. Stuff like how he didn't approve the Keystone Pipeline (which just popped up again not long ago in their whataboutism). The big problem with their case was that it was nigh all BS and the rest was badly out of context and did not work for the purposes that they were trying to use them. Keystone, for example, would not have done anything for our fuel costs because what it carried would not have been used for that purpose and would not have overlapped with the product in question meaningfully. Going further, Biden and the Democrats did make efforts to reduce demand without actually doing much to reduce supply (there's real reason for complaint there, as those like dann are happy to point out, but legality, upholding government contract reliability, and as smooth a transition as possible are all quite important as well on other relevant fronts), while Republicans keep working to increase demand more and more as we continue to rely on oil that's continually getting harder and more expensive to obtain.

Second is, frankly, that Trump's extreme mismanagement of COVID, among other things, really did have a lot to do with increased gas prices under Biden for much of Biden's Presidency in a number of ways. That includes the deal he changed and loudly bragged about that was specifically to raise the price of gas in the US and how he handled so very many oil companies going bankrupt (and not cleaning up the messes that they left on top of that). That and the consequences were very much still in effect during Biden years. Even then, of course, the price of gas wasn't under either Presidents' control, but Trump definitely deserves to be deemed at fault for prices that were much higher than they needed to be.

ETA: Honestly, even when it came to Russia's invasion of Ukraine driving up the prices, Trump had been paving the way for Putin to attack Ukraine, so I definitely blame Trump's actions far more than Biden's actions for that. The US' actions were likely not the most important factor in play, of course, but all that Republican screaming about how it was all Biden's fault was pathetic and quite the up is down level lying.

The simple difference is that the price of gas was driven up by war for both Biden and Trump, but Biden didn't start the war that impacted his term in office.

That is a simple difference yes. There's so very much more, though, and nigh all of it that shows how unreasonable and deceitful Trump and the Republican propagandists were and are being. So very much DARVO, gaslighting, and insulting everyone's intelligence.

I've been watching an old TV series* from I think the last century, (they weren't very good at comedy back then), but it was surprisingly prescient (or things just haven't changed in US politics). One comment on someone going to be a white house political appointee was 'don't let them peer pressure you into declaring war on Iran', another was 'you're now rich enough to to be elected without pretending to be a fundamentalist'. There were also some comments about the POTUS not being very bright (Ford?).

It is quite sad to think that these things were recognised decades ago bot never addressed. The product placement was also very blatant.
