Trump's Second Term

Although Trump is a notorious cheapskate and swindler I don't think he'd tolerate America being seen to be unable to host a world event on his watch. It has to be at least adequate so he can brag it was the best ever.

The biggest problem might be staff. He can recruit from the faithful at the drop of a red hat but this job is looking after foreigners instead of beating them up. He needs to appeal to a different demographic.
He would just blame it on the Democrats and the state governors and city mayors.

If the world cup goes tits up*, there's barely enough time to find an alternative host, and enough dictatorships around that would enjoy embarrassing TACO. One, China, hosted the games recently enough that they wont have any need to build new stadia.

*Which is increasingly likely, host cities are a few weeks away from having to bin the fan zones and other ancillary events for fans due tonmonies set aside for preparations not being released. And if the money is withheld past April it is very likely they won't be able to hire security or staidum staff for the matches themselves. This is all turning into a veritable ◊◊◊◊ show. Combine this with the chances that Saudi Arabia will have very few stadia ready in 2034 and two failed world cups in quick succession is probably the best result for soccer overall.

It is possible Mexico and Canada could pick up a bit of the slack.

One interesting issue is that DEI issues were part of the successful bid, not surprisingly the Us is slow on addressing these;
the United Bid made “human rights and labor standards” a centerpiece of its proposal to FIFA. The bid stipulated that each host city by August 2025 must submit concrete plans for how the city would protect individual rights, including respect for “indigenous peoples, migrant workers and their families, national, ethnic and religious minorities, people with disabilities, women, race, LGBTQI+, journalists, and human rights defenders.”.....That deadline passed without a single U.S. city submitting their plan on time. Now just months before the kickoff, host cities have finally started to release their reports, creating a patchwork of approaches. While Vancouver’s report makes multiple references to respecting LGBTQ+ populations, Houston’s has no mention of sexual orientation and identity at all.

President Trump has been remarkably consistent his entire life on Iran. Anyone who says otherwise has not been paying attention.
Well, he consistenly hates brown people and Muslims
-Sir, we could attack Iran
-How about Somalia?
-We've got that under control. We even sell them weapons. Plus it's a plain old president there
-OK, Iran then.

Much as I would like to see FIFA go "tits up," I think the most likely of many possible scenarios is that the World Cup goes on with lots of empty seats (in the U.S. venues) and minus Iran.

Yeah, no. A lot of people here are already upset that we are involved with this fiasco at all. If anything we should have dumped it and there is no way we are picking up more of the slack for this joke of a tournament. Infantino and Trump can figure it out for all I care.

So now it's clear that the US warfighting Navy has only one vessel capable of escorting a tanker "across the road" of Hormuz like helping an old lady over a crossing. Or that is all they are prepared to put in the line of actual fire.
Well its not like they have a bunch of frigates they could use.

And it does not really matter anyway.
I have no sympathy for the terrorist killed in Michigan, in view of what he was trying to do.
If people here are going to try to work up sympathy for the guy, this website is really going down the drain.
Even if thy disguse is as "Trying to understand the issues" which is what they usually do.
Meanwhile, Hesgarth says the new Irnain leader was disfigured in the attack, as if that will help clear the strai tof Hormuz.
This war is being ran by a bunch of idiots who belong back in the Crimean war with Lords Cardigan and Lucan.
There is a difference between understanding his motivations and sympathizing. If people are being radicalized its not unreasonable to wonder why.

Not to be a Negative Ned or Alarmist Alan, but given recent events in the Middle East I'd sort of expect there to be a degree of danger in attending a big splashy world-attentioned sporting event in the US.

I would expect needing to arrive four hours early for games for security checks that make flying look trivial in comparison.

Mostly because football fans can live with the idea of WWIII but not with being deprived of watching 22 guys in shorts pushing a ball around !

He'll just blame the local cities and towns, they're the ones that have to do all the work after all.

He can withhold the monies for a private slush fund (which is happening right now) and act all surprised when cities can't afford to open the stadia for games.

FIFA need the world cup to be a massive and massively visible success. It's their only money maker and props up the whole shaky political edifice of the organisation.

And if 2026 looks bad with empty stadia and bad games in the middle of a war which massively militarises the US, then sponsors and broadcasters will be looking at 2030 and asking "how much of a discount can I get?"

So Trump is saying this now:

US President Donald Trump says that "one way or the other, we will soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE!"

In a post on his platform Truth Social, he writes that he hopes China, France, Japan, South Korea and the UK will send warships to the key shipping channel so it can "no longer be a threat" by Iran.

He adds that many countries will be sending warships to keep the key shipping channel "open and safe".
Just a few days ago he was insisting the US didn't need Royal Navy warships.
