It was done at a time before the industrial revolution when most people worked on the land. The framers couldn't imagine the mass movement of people to cities that industrialization brought anymore than they could have imagined people running around with MAC-10s or AR-15s when they framed the second amendment.

We vote on Tuesday due to the fact it can take most of a day for a man to travel from his house to their polling place, and we cannot travel on the Sabbath. Travel time is also why the counting of the electoral votes is over a month after the election. It can take weeks to travel to Washington by horse or sailing ship if you are from a far-flung state like Connecticut or Georgia.

When he declares a "national emergency" and has certain democrats arrested as "insurrectionists," no one can claim they didn't see this coming. When that happens, it's done.
