Trump's Second Term

In very minor news, Democrats flipped a state rep. seat in PA in a special election. This was in a district that went Trump +15 in 2024 and hasn't elected a Democrat ever since it was formed. Local news attributes it to "low voter turnout".

Musk gave the election some minor attention in Twitter but no money to the GOP candidate. The GOP candidate also failed to show up at voter forums.

I don't know why people are so surprised by the chat group cock up.

This is what happens when you have an entire cabinet of people and a President who wouldn't pass a regular security clearance.

Well, don't you need an ID to register to vote?

We do not. We require only a birth certificate. There are people in nursing homes that have banking still working and never need an ID for anything. So the state only requires the birth certificate. The state will print out a FREE birth certificate for all born here. US foreigners, if we do not have a state ID of any sort (even the non drivers one) will need to present a US ID, such as a US passport. If you are living here part of the year, own a home even, do not qualify unless you have the state ID. It means you vote where you live the rest of the year. Such as college students only here for the school year. The students living an independent life likely have our driver's license and of course can vote here.

The driver's license is the simplest solution, and it does have an address here. The nursing home people might have a n expired driver's license. It still is accepted for voting.

They went through the entire voting register last time and have looked for the green card aliens that are allowed to drive here. None of them voted 2024.

Replacing DEI with DUI gets you this kind of thing.

That said, I am actually surprised that Waltz has come clean and admitted he made a mistake.

This of course makes the rest of these scumbags liars, but we already knew that.

By the way, though Signal may be pretty secure....

Just thinking, perhaps it is not optimally wise to be in a Signal chat while visiting the Kremlin.

"Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Tuesday drew attention to Congress’s power over the federal judiciary as Republicans plot how to legislatively channel their outrage over district judges who have blocked Trump administration actions. “We do have authority over the federal courts,” Johnson said in a press conference Tuesday. “We can eliminate an entire district court. We do have power over funding over the courts and all these other things. But desperate times call for desperate measures, and Congress is going to act.”"
This threat is obviously in response to the courts' blocking some of the Trump/Musk initiatives.

Why? It's not as if the Russians need to do anything more than get Trump on the phone to get access to the USA's most important secrets.

Why did Hillary have her own email server? Same reason.
No, she did it because she is a self-important boomer who didn't want to bother with official channels out of convenience. She wanted to use her personal Blackberry instead of the recommended methods of accessing emails. None of the data on her server was marked classified at the time.

Also, she wasn't planning war crimes.

Was it terrible practice? Yes. Was it done with malice in an obvious attempt to avoid FOIA requirements? Hell, no.

Radley Balko wrote, "At least two of the immigrants Trump sent to a Salvadoran prison came here legally to flee persecution in Venezuela. They applied for refugee status, passed a background check, were approved, and then came to the U.S. They did everything they were supposed to do. They were fleeing a dictatorship. Now they’re being tortured in one of the cruelest prisons on earth." I am not sure what to say any longer.
Nice to see we are still the nation that stood up to Hitler in 1939 and refused to take his jews from him and demanded that he find his own solution for his Jewish problem. It is probably the most American thing this administration has done. Hats off to them.

I've been wondering what I'd text if I were added to such a group. I don't think I'd be able to stay silent. I think I'd just spam it with "LOL"

I would have simply assumed any device brought into Russia would be compromised, and would have made sure any US officials going there take only burner phones which would then be dissected by the CIA afterwards. But I guess I might just put a moment's thought and common sense into the matter which would be silly to expect of this administration on the topic of national security.

SCIFs exist for a reason. I'm pretty sure any important communications that need to be done from another country are done via satellite or some other encrypted method.

Ironically, my job is sending me this week to a training course being taught by a former ELINT specialist for the Navy and NSA. Dude red teamed for the government to test our cybersecurity. He's had...some opinions...about this.

To no one's surprise, Dump is going after federal election laws.
Passports or other ID will be required, and no mail-in ballots arriving after Election Day will be accepted.

In other words, measures to make it (even) harder for the wrong people to vote in elections. Don't get me wrong, I find the fact that you don't need ID to vote in the US to be completely absurd (unless I've misunderstood how it works), but I'd find it a much better solution to make sure 'everyone' has ID than to only impose ID requirements.

It may be more impactful than just suppressing votes. Suppose that in 2026 or 2028, not all states are fully in compliance, or might not be fully in compliance, or people are saying that they weren't fully in compliance. In that case, why, the President would owe it to the American people to put off the election until they could be sure that all districts were fully compliant so we could have a really Free and Fair* election. However long that takes.

*no election official or election worker or voter is suspected of being contaminated with Democratness or RINOness or DEIness.

Did not see it upthread, but this is part of the Signal thread that Jeffrey Goldberg released this morning:

A bold move, and clearly confirms that several on the chat lied to Congress yesterday.
