Trump's Second Term

It was a good call to release the texts. Tulsi said they were unclassified, after all.

Reading them, it sure looks like classified info to me, but I aint the expert.
They certainly are 100 times worse than anything Hillary sent, that is obvious.

Said Pete Hesgeth on Fox News a few years ago: "If this were anyone other than Hillary, they would be in jail right now!"

Will Trump fire him, or Waltz? Michael Cohen thinks he will. But I'm not so sure, trump has become so emboldened by avoiding any consequences for any of his felonies that he now thinks he and anyone around him is invincible, and he can create new alternative truths to cover up their inadequacies and outright crimes. That is the tactic he is using so far, just deny anything about this story is consequential, blame it all on fake news, and continue to claim that it is just a witch hunt to distract from how great he is. It has traditionally worked with his audience, but will it work this time?

Did not see it upthread, but this is part of the Signal thread that Jeffrey Goldberg released this morning:

A bold move, and clearly confirms that several on the chat lied to Congress yesterday.
Apparently that information was not classified....

Question - will they be brazen enough to claim he made the above up and those details were never in the chat? All fake news. Presumably they just have to delay until it auto-deletes then claim any screen shots are faked.

Is anyone else struck by the Russian vranyo style of the responses, with a confusing flurry of mutually incompatible stories thrown into the information space?

It didn't happen, but it also did happen but the journalist is still lying, and he's not lying but he hacked in somehow and of course nobody hacked in because a junior staffer just typed a phone number wrongly and it just happened to be a journalist at The Atlantic and everything's fine nothing to see here. It never happened. Whichever way you think it happened it wasn't that. Ooh. Squirrel.

Those of us in the UK think of it more as "Johnsonesque", but I'm sure if you follow the strings back far enough you'll find the same people pulling them.

It should have been. Details of impending operations are considered highly sensitive information. Either it was appropriately classified and they're lying about it, or it was inappropriately unclassified. Either way the participants in the group chat are at fault.

Yes, that's the press secretary's claim as of this morning, as reported on NPR.

Not likely he will fire them. That would be a sign of weakness and a victory for the press and free speech.

But I hope I'm wrong and he does. But if he does, he gets no credit for doing the right thing. It's something that any normal President would do.

Wasn't there already an assertion to try to make "trump derangement syndrome" classified as a mental illness in the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)?

Yes, by a kiddie diddler in Minnesota.

The thing is, the only way that reporter was on someone's phone is if they were a regular contact. Walz may have outed himself as a leak.

But sadly it doesn't matter any more. Republicans can lie with impunity under any and all circumstances.
DNI Tulsi Gabbard is now saying she "misremembered" the contents of the Signal group chat during her testimony yesterday when she said war plans were not discussed. She is now claiming this proves she wasn't as involved in the chat as others have indicated. Or the most parsimonious conclusion is that she was lying then and she's lying now to backpedal from the previous lie.

In other news, The Atlantic's morning headline characterizing the chat as "attack plans" is now being heralded by Republication leadership as some sort of concession that the chat did not contain "war plans."

Hasn't Walz already confirmed the chat is legit?
Waltz is all over the map. There doesn't seem to be anyone coordinating the message.

Some are claiming the chat is legitimate but somehow still did not involve information that was classified or should have been classified. Some are still claiming the chat is something Jeffrey Goldberg just made up.

When the President can say that the elected president of an allied nation is a dictator on TV and a few days later "Did I say that? I don't think I said that" I think we can assume that facts about who did what are less important than 'whatever gets us through the next news cycle'.

Where do you get the idea this was an "unsecured app"? Signal uses end to end encryption in its protocol and is considered "best of class" software. Not even people running the servers can see what's being posted; only the receiving devices can.
Yeah I'm sure its completely impervious to the Russian and the Chinese, especially given the collection of goons using it in this instance.

Imagine if they had Signal in other time periods and were as inept as the Dump cabinet.

Hirohito: "The weather is nice, so we're go for the December 6th surprise attack on Pearl Harbour!"
Yamamoto: "lololololol!🐅🐅🐅🛩️🛩️🚢🛳️🔥🛟😂"
Hirohito: "Just two days bro!"
*John Smith has entered the chat

Hitler: "Soviet noobs have no idea we'll team switch. Everything ready for June 22nd?"
Göring: "Imma destroy all their planes on the ground!"
*Vasili has entered the chat
Hitler: "◊◊◊◊ everyone stop talking!"
Rommel69: "Who added the #@$€ russian?"
Hitler: "U ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ noobs, can people who were added read the chat history?"

That EO is aimed at making sure that the "wrong" people aren't able to vote so:

- Voter ID is a requirement
- No counting of postal votes after the election date

It's anything but an attempt to preserve and protect the integrity of American elections.
An illegal attempt. He's legislating by EO, which is unlawful and wrong.

Does anybody in the USA, I mean, anybody at all, find something like this appalling?
The Atlantic publishes Yemen ‘attack plans shared by Trump aides’ on Signal (AlJazeera, Mar 26, 2025)
An account seeming to belong to US Vice President JD Vance, apparently confused, wrote “What?”, to which the Waltz account responded: “Typing too fast. The first target – their top missile guy – we had positive ID of him walking into his girlfriend’s building and it’s now collapsed.
All the time, I see the consternation about how the leaking of attack plans to a journalist on Signal may threaten the security of the USA and American lives, and blah, blah, blah, but does nobody find it concerning that they appear to have killed the girlfriend of the "top misssile guy" of the Houthis?
So far, I haven't seen any all-lives-matter comments, and I'm wondering why.
Did they make sure that the girlfriend - or any other civilians - wasn't in the building when it was attacked? Does it even matter, like, at all when Americans look at this?!
