Trump's Second Term

I find your insinuations very strange. I am familiar with the matched-CV studies in one area: hiring for tenure-track positions in STEM. According to a recent systematic review, a total of six such studies have been conducted.
This is to correct my original post, above, in which I omitted the highlighted word.

Telling people that they are White and being discriminated against is exactly the same thing as giving them a meaningless title like Vice president of corporate empowerment.
All so you don't notice that you got get more money or power, only the obligation to fight against your fellow citizens and workers.
It's what Corporate America has always done to split the allegiances of the citizens and/or workforce.

I shared this on FB, and got a fact-check message saying it was partly false. A number of the claims about what P25 wants were not true.
This is the article cited by FB's fact-checkers:
Hm, there are page references in the post you shared. Are they really made up?

This should make Elon happy.

The Department of Transport has ordered states to retract their plans to build hundreds of federally funded EV charging stations, according to a memo obtained by Wired.

The US Department of Transportation has ordered states to kill their implementation plans related to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, according to a memo obtained by WIRED that was later made public. The decision appears to halt in its tracks a $5 billion program designed to fund state projects to install electric vehicle charging stations across the United States.

Officials at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which manages the program, ordered state transportation directors to “decertify” the plans that all 50 states have used to outline where and how they will build their charging stations

Not sure how many are completely made up, but some of them seem to be at least inaccurate.

That said, if you look at this document and search through words like contraception, abortion and vaccine, you get the idea that this document is strongly against getting any of this on Affordable Care Act: morning after pills, abortions and vaccines that have been tested on cell lines from aborted fetuses. There's clearly a very religious right aspect to their "healthcare" approach.

ETA: It was written by Roger Severino, someone who has very strong religious beliefs about the sanctity of the traditional family and very strong religious beliefs against those whose behaviour is immoral. In other words, as Christopher Hitchens says, you may want to mentally set your watch...

25-Year-Old Elon Musk Crony Has Total Control Over Treasury Payments

If the story at the New Republic is true, as a long time I/T professional I find this terrifying. Allowing one single person to modify code on a payment system without any oversight or code review? Just what is the new code doing? Auditing, I hope, but what's to say it isn't shaving one penny off of every payment and sending it to a secret account?

If this was being done by anyone else other than one of Musk's minions, that person would be instantly arrested and charged under the Computer Fraud and Abuse act, for starters. A huge number of additional charges would follow, probably enough to put that person behind bars for twenty years and more.

I note the person in question has resigned because he's been unmasked as a racist who wanted to repeal the Civil Rights Act and had promoted hatred toward people from India.

How is it possible to even learn an entire software system in just a few days much less modify it?

Elon has turned his attention to the military

American weapons programs need to be completely redone.

The current strategy is to build a small number of weapons at a high price to fight yesterday’s war.

Unless there are immediate and dramatic changes made, America will lose the next war very badly.

That should be interesting. Pentagon procurement is one of the biggest make-work programs in America. It's the closest thing we have to Guaranteed Jobs Program. And the inefficient "make lots of little factories all over" model is specifically designed to make shutting down the gravy train as politically painful as possible.

I am hopeful that Dems will keep this attitude through the next few election cycles.
Could you speak up a little bit? It’s hard to hear you over the sound of the adjudicated rapist who’s also credibly accused by two dozen other women of sexual assault.

ETA: ninja’d by the always on point johnny karate.

My knowledge of this kind of thing is likely at least a couple of decades out of date but we used to have a handful of "oldtimers" lurking around for some of our critical systems simply because they understood how it worked and more importantly had a knowledge of the bodges and cludges that had been stuck in over the years.

The US government systems are presumably huge and parts will be quite old so I'd expect millions of line of code, large chunks of which are redundant these days (but not removed just in case something else is broken in the process). Unless AI is able to scan, interpret and understand all of it I cannot imagine how anyone could develop anything other than a cursory knowledge of it and to make changes without weeks or months of regression testing gives me the screaming abdabs. Once again maybe this is something that AI takes care of these days and there's no need for testing - or maybe they don't care if they break it.

This depends on which kind of change he wanted to implement. Sending a fraction of transactions to a certain account might be doable.

Elon says they are the best programmers in the world.
Even if they are, tackling a huge antiquated system written in a language and using coding standards you're not that familiar with without ******* it up is a big ask IMO especially if it's done in a hurry without adequate testing.

This is the computer system that handles US Government payments. Doesn't need to use old fashioned techniques like stealing lots of tiny amounts so it doesn't get noticed. Just send a payment for a hundred million dollars to your Swiss bank account, wait for the confirmation from your bank, then delete the transaction from the Treasury computer. Unless the bank checks back with the Government to make sure that particular deposit was real, how would anyone know?

I just read that EO. Where does it state anything that resembles this description? Explain to me how this disallows discussion on slavery.
I was referring to Project 2025 and the "ban books and curriculum about slavery". Just how does this do anything but seriously affect discussion of slavery in the class room. And if it is not on the curriculum how will it be discussed? Unless it is discussed outside the curriculum in which case what could happen to teachers or students who in fact raise the topic?

And of course the simple fact of banning books is overt censorship. (I wonder if Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn be banned?)

So far this has not be implemented, yet. But given Project 2025's influence so far don't be surprised if it is. And it is Orwellian in my opinion.
