Trump's Second Term

Canada has signalled it will take a robust approach to Trump, best articulated by the contender to be the country's next prime minister, Mark Carney.

"We will retaliate … dollar for dollar" he told the BBC, ridiculing the fentanyl rationale and saying Canada would "stand up to a bully".

The US farmers group, Farmers for Free Trade, has heavily criticised Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China.

It’s chairman, Bob Hemesath says: “Placing tariffs on the three largest export markets for American farmers and ranchers, particularly for an extended period of time, will have severe consequences.”

Trump's tariffs are nothing short of an act of war. This will be the biggest economic upheaval in my lifetime. Nothing else even comes close.

I've also never seen this level of unity and anger here. Americans in Canada had better watch their backs. They shouldn't feel safe here whatsoever.

As far as I'm concerned nothing should be off the table for Canada's response. Electricity exports should be cut immediately. Let the morons sit in the dark. A 100% tariff on all Tesla and musk owned products as well as a 25% tariff on every other piece of ◊◊◊◊ america produces.

The world needs to unite against this and make the US feel some pain for a change.
I'd be all for that in any state that voted for Trump. Unfortunately, it would punish all of us in states who didn't vote for that POS.

Republican congressman Jason Smith, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, has praised President Trump's tariff announcement.

"President Trump is delivering on his promise to take bold action to protect our communities, secure our borders, and bring in additional revenues to the federal government,"

he the tariffs willa "send a powerful message that the United States will no longer stand by as other nations fail to halt the flow of illegal drugs and immigrants into our country."

The tariffs must be used as a means to "defeat cartels and end the import of drugs", and bring in "billions in new revenue to the U.S. government".

I think Elon was surprised by the fact that the Treasury sends out checks even though they believe them to be fraudulent or criminal. This is because it is not the job of the Treasury to approve sending out checks, just to send them out. Anything else would be illegal.

That reminds me of a book I read on the genesis of the CumEx tax fraud case in Denmark, where employees in the section of the Danish treasury who handled dividend tax rebates kept raising the alarm, that some of transactions they were making made no sense, but they had no authority to withhold them. And so they kept paying out millions, and later on billions, even if they suspected something was very, very wrong.

It wound up costing Danish tax payers several billions, and we'll never know the true loss, because the treasury has never been told to produce such a figure (a sum of 12.7 billion DKK, around US$2 billion, has been quoted frequently, but that was from investigating a specific set of cases). I suspect it would lead to a riot if the true figure ever got out.

So another Republican Congressman who has no idea how tariffs work and/or just a Trump ass kisser.

WTF. Are the Cartels going to be paying tariffs now? Their accountants will be really pissed.

Canada is prepared

Justin Trudeau
@JustinTrudeau
The United States has confirmed that it intends to impose 25% tariffs on most Canadian goods, with 10% tariffs on energy, starting February 4.

I’ve met with the Premiers and our Cabinet today, and I’ll be speaking with President Sheinbaum of Mexico shortly.

We did not want this, but Canada is prepared. I’ll be addressing Canadians later this evening.

Quite a few MAGAts on twitter saying Canada is 'going down'
They seem to think it's a war.
It is effectively a war. Trump's "art" of the deal is to strong-arm and bully other people into accepting his terms. He literally knows no other way to operate. He thinks he can do this on the global stage. The tariff issue has nothing to do with funding the United States government in lieu of taxes. It's all about Trump thinking he can bully other countries into terms that are lopsidedly in favor of the U.S. And no, he doesn't care one little bit for how the American people will bear the cost of his playacting.

Make no mistake. This is an act of war. Multiple Canadian premiers are using that exact language. Some stores are already pulling american products off the shelves.

I have never seen this level of anger towards the US in my entire life. People are literally talking about vandalizing cars with American plates right now. It will only get worse as the effects of these tariffs begin to sink in.

I guess I can kiss my Great Bear Lake plans for July goodbye. And the money I've spent so far.

Off topic: I’ve taken it upon myself to notify the mods this thread is about 600 posts past the number for splitting into a new/continuation.
Phhtt...any thread about Trump has to be the Bigliest Thread ever! It has to be Huuuuge! 600 is nothing it needs to be 600,000 before it even approaches the # that Trump so meritoriously deserves! :giggle:

Trudeau announces a suite of 25% counter-tariffs on $155 billion of US goods. Details will emerge later but the items mentioned so far appear clearly to be targeting red states. Whisky & bourbon as well as Florida orange juice was mentioned specifically.
