Trump's Second Term

White man makes black man go to the back of the bus.

Donald Trump took his rivalry with Barack Obama to the walls of the White House Friday, replacing a portrait of the former US president with one of himself surviving an assassination attempt. The 78-year-old Republican moved the picture of the Democrat, the only Black US president, to the opposite side of the famed residence's grand entrance hallway.

The move is a highly unusual one for a sitting president, as most must wait to leave office before getting their portrait hung in the historic 200-year-old building. "Some new artwork at the White House," the White House said on X, along with a video of people walking past Trump's new picture in the spot by the main stairwell where Obama's formerly hung.
He truly is a petulant child. A toddler with the nuclear codes.

Here's a link to a BBC article about Canadian and Danish consumers boycotting US goods in response to US threats to their countries and to the tariffs.

This is (currently) my preferred approach, avoid reciprocal tariffs making unavoidable things more expensive but move away from US-supplied goods and services (my company has just cancelled its Microsoft contracts).

I raised an eyebrow at a US based distiller's response to this....

Among the American businesses feeling the impact is Caledonia Spirits, a distiller based in Vermont, near the Canadian border. Ryan Christiansen, Caledonia's president and head distiller, says his business had an order on track for shipment to Quebec cancelled directly after tariffs were announced.

"My sense is that everyone's just being a little too aggressive and, unfortunately, I think America started that," says Mr Christiansen. "I do understand that the action America took needed a counter reaction.

"If it were up to me, I'd be at the table trying to resolve this in a friendly way, and I'm hopeful that the leaders in America take that approach."

Firstly, yes, I'm sure you'd like to avoid the consequences of your government's actions, but to be hopeful of America's leaders resolving the issue in a friendly way seems to ignore the clear evidence of the last few months and Trump's first term.

Approximately 50% of the US electorate are perfectly happy with that kind of ****. One of the reasons why Trump's election, re-election, and Brexit - fuelled by a wave of racism and xenophobia - have disappointed me is that I thought we were better than that and that racists were a tiny minority. It turns out that racists are a large minority, and possibly a majority.

Sure that racism has been exacerbated by wave after wave of right wing scare stories but they've been pushing at an open door IMO. Even people who I consider somewhat liberal are making noises about how dangerous asylum seekers are, how Muslims are a threat, how foreigners are diluting "our" culture and so on - echoing the constant claims from the right wing.

I'm suspicious of her claim. First, she doesn't say what state is involved. Second, I find it hard to believe that in this day and age, that any state would require people who now live far away to actually show up in person to get a copy of their birth certificate or any other similar records.

Well, I don't know about any other state, but I can still get mine online from RI.

Mrs. Shemp and I had to get copies of our birth certificates to get REAL ID. I went to the records office in Concord, NH for mine, since I was born here and it was quicker than getting it by mail, but I could have done that. She got hers by mail from the state records office in Maine, and she received it in 10 days. She just had to fill out a form, and send it with a stamped self-addressed envelope, a photocopy of her driver's license, and a check for $15. Many states also partner with VitalChek and you can order them online.

However, her claim that it's effectively a poll tax is true. We had to each pay $15 for a certified copy.

I strongly suspect that this person is misinformed, but I could be wrong. You can get the requirements and addresses for all 50 states for obtaining records at https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w/index.htm. Since she didn't say which state, I'm not going through all 50 to see if there's any that really require you to do it in person.
I looked up Oklahoma. Not a problem. But...there is an offer!
Commemorative heirloom certificates are also available: cost $35.00 and includes one (1) certified copy. Detailed description of the heirloom certificate is available at OSDH

Ric Grenell on the Kennedy Center: "We don't need to be booing Republicans like when the vice president shows up. People need to be able to sit in chairs and enjoy the arts without trying to figure out what the person next to you believes or who they voted for."

Plus he solved the wages problem by firing everyone.

Tough ◊◊◊◊. You're gonna get booed until you root maga out from your party, or Donnie Diapers makes any criticism of maga illegal.

From that thread, there is one parson that had more of a problem, but it was sorted by mail to Guam.

I was NOT born in one of the 50 states. I was born in a US Territory in a military hospital and delivered by a military doctor. I’m a child of two parents with families histories that have Revolutionary War soldiers in my direct lineage. So here is what I have to do in order to be able to vote because at some point in my life…I married a man & took his last name.

so when this whole thing falls apart and the market has a liquidity crisis, who’s going to pay for the bailouts if nobody is buying the debt? raise rates and print money

and if you think this isn’t going to come along with a massive amount of fraud, well i’d wager one of us will be surprised and it’s probably not me.

Nah, it'll be a chance to end using the dollar and switch to crypto! Trump's oligarch crony techbros will be in charge of that, it'll work out great. Thiel watches a lot of science fiction and has some interesting ideas for how he can transform us all into his grand vision for a techno empire.

Smartphones, computers, chips as well as other electronic devices and components, including semiconductors, solar cells, flat panel TV displays, flash drives, memory cards and solid-state drives are now exempt from Tariffs.

So all those millions the Tech companies donated to Donald's inauguration fund paid off.

I guess someone saw the story about EU getting lower prices on electronics, and thought 'Oh no you don't!'.

it’s back to pre industrialization. each company gets its own crypto scrip that changes wildly in value day over day and crashes once in a while backed by an ever decreasing amount of bitcoin you can only spend at approved company stores.

Probably not. Even if those things are not lofted in price everything else is, which will reduce the overall spending power of the lower classes. As much as the ruling class hates the lower classes, it's the latter who actually drive the economy by buying things.

What a load of hot, steaming ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊! It's just a present to El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele for his enthusiastic cooperation.
As far as I know Bukele has indeed broken the back of the gangs, and El Salvador is a rather safe place now. Except for Salvadorians who risk being sent to the jails if they say anything negative about Bukele’s policies, and it can take 1 1/2 years before they are seen by a judge.

I think the ultimate ultimate goal is to get rid of money entirely and not use mediums of exchange at all: we'll each be owned by a megacorporation which will issue us the goods and services its leadership believes we merit. Based on our usefulness --and loyalty-- to the corporation, of course.

There was an episode of "The John Larroquette Show" back in 1993 in which his character, the night manager of a bus depot, refused to rent a bus to a group of Neo-Nazis who were planning a big public outing to celebrate Hitler's birthday. The depot got sued and the Jewish lawyer representing the Nazis argued that it was better for people like them to be out in the open, where everyone can see them and laugh at them, instead of growing and festering in dark corners like mold.
We've now seen that being out in the open just encouraged them and people who share their attitudes.

There's a joke, "How does every racist joke in the world start?", with the physically performed punchline being a cautious turn of the head to both sides to see who's nearby to overhear. People aren't looking around anymore, and they're not telling jokes.
