I think I should add that my lesson of this is that the style, and brilliance of the speech apparently doesn't mean so much as the content: the morons audiences heard his ignorant, hateful message, and liked what they heard.

I've been a medical secretary in a teaching hospital for 30 years, my boss was a member of the local disciplinary board for medical professionals, I've seen all kinds of doctors and surgeons who did pass all the necessary exams but proved to be ill mannered, socially inept, consistently irrational, and often a real danger for the patients, so forgive me for not being totally persuaded that getting a MD or a PhD is a complete guarantee for what is considered intelligence.

Well, it had to be rather dim people. The reason it worked 2016 is that the MAGA people had already thought these things and were thrilled when Trump said them out loud.

What you're describing in the bolded does not mean they weren't intelligent. It means they had personality problems or perhaps social skills difficulties due to being on the autism spectrum, etc. Someone who is "consistently irrational" has a mental health problem, not a lack of intelligence. A doctor who is "a real danger for their patients" isn't a very good doctor, perhaps due to poor training or sloppiness, but that doesn't equate to not being intelligent.

I've said all I'm going to say on this topic, so respond if you feel you must. I simply disagree with you.
