Canada's food inspection agency has announced a temporary ban on livestock from the US state of Texas after flesh-eating screwworms were discovered in calves this week.

This really sucks for US agriculture and IMO shows a pretty serious dropping of the ball by those in control of the USDA.

The new world screwworm was eradicated all the way down to Panama in 2006 with sterile release programs, largely driven by the USDA beginning in the late 50s. It cost a lot but was well worth it in prevented agricultural losses.

People have been raising alarms about this deadly pest coming back into areas where it had previously been eliminated for years (here is a USDA bulletin from Feb 2025 about resuming Mexican livestock imports after they were stopped over screwworms) but it hasn't been taken very seriously yet. Hopefully that will change, but a lot of preventable and expensive damage has already been done.

It's a serious pest that can cause livestock losses of up to 20% by exacerbating wounds and getting into the navels of newborn calves.

The cost of eradication in the U.S. and Mexico (1960–1991) was 955 million dollars. Eradication provided annual benefits of 1.350 billion dollars in the U.S..
