There are a number of understandable criticisms that can be made. "Lack of protests" does not seem to be one of them.

The relative lack of coverage for protests that may have fooled you, on the other hand...

There are basically two kinds of protests going on in the US. Lots of little ones with half a dozen people standing somewhere in their local town with some signs.

Then there are larger ones like no kings that happen every 2-3 months for a couple hours on a Saturday and get massive turnout.

I'm all for protesting and there is good to doing this but the problem is that neither of these really causes any disruption to the fascist agenda. Everyone goes home after a couple hours and the regime continues on because to them it has about as much effect as a music concert people went to on the weekend.

On the one hand, yes it does not disrupt the approach of fascism.

On the other hand it does show people that said approach is not popular and people are willing to protest it.

And finally, it totally freaks out the fascist supporters who are convinced that everyone loves the fascist agenda. Remember the summer No Kings had loads right-wingers desperately trying to discredit the whole event. Claiming things like "they are using old footage" (a rumor started by right-wing AI Grok) or "Its just old people" or "Don't they have jobs?!!?!" (it was Saturday). Then later they have been lamenting that they cannot seem to organize protests (mostly because they have no reason to protest) and bemoaning their lack of protests. Of course they also ignore that their protests have been disasters (Unite the Right and Jan 6th). Of course we also cannot forget those right-wing influencers who think showing at the protest wearing their red cap is some kind of huge statement and brag about how its going to upset everyone but end up being ignored. The spin on those gets pretty pathetic.

No one thing is going to stop a fascist agenda. Obviously, Trump and his sycophants will spin these stories any way they want. And yes, a lot of people just show up, have a good time, post on social media, and then just wait for the next party.

But, a lot of people are using these are one step in a larger, prolonged campaign. It also works as a good way to show folks who may feel isolated and scared that they aren't alone. It can help boost the energy and remind folks that this stuff isn't normal.

I don't think this is going to work out as well for Stubby McBonespurs as Comer thinks.

ICE is already quite unpopular with a large number of people. So they want to take a hated group and make it MORE visible?

If the ICE gestapo wears masks as the airports like they do when they are shooting american citizens in the back, it will remind people "hey, there is a problem with these guys". If they don't wear masks, it makes it easier to dox them.

And what happens when they do the regular ICE thing and become abusive and trigger happy in the middle of an airport, filled largely with WHITE travelers?

Why report on a protest involving thousands of people if there were no "problems" at the protest, and there are stories about Iran, ICE abuses and Epstein to cover? (Even a "left wing" media source might see Iran/Epstein as more important.)

I guess I've grown too cynical to believe that. The same media has been pretending Dump's dementia doesn't exist while Biden's (less severe) health problems were front page coverage every day for months. Elonia's textbook Nazi salute was 'a gesture that kinda resembled a Nazi salute', and they farmed clicks by turning it into a debate between far-right gaslighters and, well, people with eyes and working brains.
