It's rather sad that people seem to be more upset by a building being demolished than by millions of Americans losing their food assistance.

It is, however a powerful visual image that encapsulates a lot that is wrong with Trump's presidency.

It was done on his personal whim
It went ahead without reference to the law
It is for Trump's personal benefit
It is directly against his promise about the building
It is destroying something that was fine
And it's a frivolity he's concentrating on rather than issues that affect any Americans outside his family

It also has "dictator of tinpot country builds grand new palace" vibes.

Or the millions who will die worldwide because the US just up and cut aid programs, even if it meant letting perfectly good food supplies rot. It's human nature, though, the White House is a beloved monument while millions of strangers dying is just another terrible thing happening in the background.

A bit of a summary trough my eyes about possible reasons to vote for Trump and the reality

You voted for Trump:
Because you wanted to openly be a bigot again. Verdict: total success
Because you are a billionaire wanting to loot the US. Verdict: total succes
Because you thought a businessman would run the economy better. Verdict: Who knows, as any results from his erratic actions are forbidden to be analyzed, but probably not good.
Because you thought Trump would protect women. Verdict: Well, most high ranking women are purged from the military and government now and the only woman he explicitly helped is a sex trafficker of young girls. Mentioning that women had positive influence on the army or government is now forbidden.
Because you thought Trump would help farmers. Verdict: Sure, he has promised to help them partially out of the economic hole he shoved them in himself.
Because you thought he would lower taxes. Verdict: Sure, official taxes are promised to be lowered (mainly for billionaires) but Tariffs are also a tax so a net negative.
Because you thought he would stop the US being involved in conflicts abroad. Verdict: Failure.
Because he would 'Drain the swamp' and stop corruption. Verdict: He's draining the US treasury directly into his and his family's pockets and not even trying to hide it.

I suppose this list can be longer, but from outside of the US it seems Trump has failed the vast majority of his voters. But I'm sure they can blame that on the Democrats

It's a symbol and a symptom, and I'm pretty sure most of the people who are upset do so because they are thinking of all the people worldwide who are losing their ways of subsistance in favour of such wasteful vanity projects.

…and the terrifying thing is you can apply this list to all the people worldwide who are voting for actual or wannabe autocrats. Most of the people I know in France who hope to see the far right in power do approve of most of what Trump is doing …
